southern electric

Had a southern electric rep to the door and told me that my current provider charge higher than they do because my provider buys the electric from them and because they are not a UK company also higher charges and supporting another countries economy rather than our own - very emotive words, which I'm sure thy rely upon.

To shoot that down tho, all but British Gas operate the powerstations in the UK, so Southern Electric, E.on, Npower, Scottish Power and EDF, this electricity goes in to the national grid so by the time you flip a switch at home there's no way of knowing where it came from.

A friend of mine works for British Gas via an outsource company, and advised that prices are set according to consumption as projected by the power comapny based on customer numbers.

One thing that concerned me with the southern rep was quick to point out how cheap that comapnies primary unit prices were against what I currently pay when I pointed out that the secondary electric unit rate was more than 2p per unit dearer, and gas was the same, glossed over it by reiterating how much cheaper the primary was. Problem is the primary unit rate is payed for a set number of units per quarter (varies comapny to company), so the majority of your bill each quarter is based on secondary unit prices, NOT primary, so he would have cost me more for my electric by quite a bit, at this point politely declined his proposition and asked him to leave. So beware of stupid things said by reps, not just southerns
