Moving Homes

I am moving homes in two weeks and have the Unlimited UK* Evening & Weekend call plan with option 1. I have been told I will need to pay a charge of £70 to cancel my contract as I am tied in until June 2010.

I am planning to keep my number but is there any way of not paying this charge? I want to keep the package in our new home and will have a new contract I think.

  • Hi

Having just moved I can advise you that they would only not charge me the £125 if there was a line already there. If you've had no discounts on connection before they will let you off some of it. But if they have to run a cable <this is for bt> they have to charge as they outsource it to another company.

    Nonsense.

The current free installation offer (with conditions) is available to almost everybody. About the only exception would be a remote rural install where poles and new overhead cabling would be required.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
  • Not if you've already had the free connection it isn't available. BT told me it would of been free if they hadn't had to recable.. that's what I mean.

If you move home within contract BT should not 'charge' you for breaking your contract provided you use BT for telephony at your new address, but you would be starting a new 12 month contract.
If the new address currently has working BT telephone service that you can takeover then there shouldnt be an installation charge...if the property has never had service or has a socket but no dialtone you may be charged the install fee, but sign up to a new 18 month contract
and that fee can be waived.
if BT cannot offer service at your new address there shouldnt be a cancel contract fee either
If the new address is served from the same exchange as your current address then you should be able to move your number to your new address
