I think this depends what you're used to....I progresed from Megadrive through to ps2 and 3, so I am used to the controller size, layout, etc. I hate trying to play xbox360 games using the lump of lead with d-pads and joysticks the wrong way round !!! :)

yeah, i played on the ps1 before i touched an xbox. i never had an issue until i got the ps3. the issue is mainly with the sticks. the left stick is in a better position on the xbox. the top is also curved in rather than out like on the ps3. for some odd reason aiming seems to be more sensitive on the ps3.

if we arent careful this is going to turn into a "which 1 is better" fight

sorry it was just the impression your post gave.

We love our XBox - the whole family have enjoyed it.

My only gripe is that it's so blooming noisy. It's something you need to bear in mind if you're using it to watch DVDs as it can be annoying.

In all fairness, that's no contest.... Just go for the quietest, most advanced, cheapest to upgrade a hard-drive one which comes with free multiplayer and the ability to play blu-rays...

Cheers folks - I think gaming with friends is a big aspect that I kind of under prioritised - several of his friends have Xbox and none PS3.

Getting back to the real issue....
I'm a PS3 fan but really if the young fella has friends with a hoover.. oops xbox :D then it's a no brainer, get him that or else find him some decent new friends with PS3's......... :rotfl:
What if the Hokey Pokey really is what it's all about !!!

As a bit of an update, the latest firmware download adds iplayer as an item under TV in the top level menu (XMB as it's called). It's basically just a wrapper for the mini-browser thing they had going but makes it a lot less difficult to find.

I've got one of the backwards compatible 60GB models. Of all the things they've stripped out, I'd probably miss the USB ports the most, the ability to stand on it's end a clost second.

I've never used the card reader and I've only used the backwards compat for a couple of games (Worms 4 :) )Linux install has been tempting but couldn't really see the point. It'd be different if I didn't have a PC I suppose.

Still, the new one does look very sleek...

i know we are hurtling off topic
however i just dont get Sony dropping BC on the PS3
i understand dropping hardware emulation due to costs.
even if Sony slated M$ for the superiority of hardware vs software emulation ;)
however for me it is a console selling point. we got a PS3 recently and thankfully for my OH there is a workaround to make PS2 singstar work on the PS3
the only thing i can think of is perhaps the drive causes issues playing PS2 discs?
as i expect the PS3 should be more than capable of software emulation
