3 Mobile Broadband dongle connectivity

I have recently begun to have a connectivity problem with my 3 mobile broadband.
I'm using Vista (SP2) and a Huawei E160 dongle, using 3Connect 1.0.0, BL 36, though the same problem also occurs with a later version of their software, which I have tried installing.
When the software is installed first time, it checks the device and network signal and is then able to connect without problem. Once it is disconnected and the dongle is physically removed or even the computer just restarted, it no longer functions (A "no network" message is shown, although the light on the dongle indicates it is receiving a signal) and the only way I have found to fix this is to uninstall and then reinstall the software by 'plugging and playing' the dongle.
I don't have any of the software packages 3 list as incompatible with their software and there is no other answer I can find on their website. I've tried their customer support, but they just take me through scripts they are reading out and don't seem aware of the issue, which (probably) means that they haven't encountered it as something generic.
Is my PC checking something before the software starts the second time?
Is the software "writing" something to my PC when it is first used?
Is there a security setting I should turn off?
Am I missing something obvious and/or has anyone else also come across this problem? Any suggestions gratefully received...
