I know, its mad, I can just imagine their complaints manager has a repetitive job.
  • thanks guys!!

i think the best price i've had so far is my renewal quote i might have to stick to that.

but i'm not giving up just yet i'm going to ring around a few more places to see if they can beat it!! no harm in trying...

I'm glad you brought the Insurer to our attention as we often tell people you normally only pay an excess if you claim for your own repairs. We can advise people that this does not apply with XS direct.

It will not do you any harm to have a shop around, try what I suggested with a local broker first and ask them why the quote is so high. They should be able to explain why and any hints /tips that might help reduce it. It could save you a lot of money and you could use their advice when doing your own shopping around

Have you tried Admiral and Elephant for quotes. I have just spent the last 2 weeks hunting around for a reasonable quote for my Son, who sets off all the alarms going in respect to age, claim history etc. and those 2 were about half his renewal and £500 lower than the next quote.

The underlying thing is, you are still fairly young, and the Cooper S is a quick car! Gone are the days when you turn 25 and are suddenly seen as a good risk, it is more granular for most insurers now. It still seems a little high, but as I say, chances are it is postcode or occupation pushing the premium up a few hundred £.

This is the crux of it really. A Cooper S is very different to a bog-standard Mini. From memory you're looking at group 30 or 32 for the Cooper S and 16 or 17 for the basic models. For most insurers, you'd be looking at a minimum age of 24 or 25 to insure anyone on a Cooper S. So you're on the borderline in terms of age acceptability, you've got less than maximum NCD and so if anything else is mildly averse - postcode, occupation etc then unfortunately you're never going to find a bargain premium.

Edited to add: It's not the John Cooper Works variant is it? If so then the premiums you've got really aren't too bad...

As their policy is so different to any other, if you want to be correct in all things you'd have to have a special exclusion paragraph for them:

    1) Your premium isn't affected no matter how many claims you have whilst insured by them.

    2) Your premium isn't affected when you have any incidents (fault/non fault/resulting in a claim/not resulting in a claim.

    3) Your premium isn't affected by your previous incidents/claims (ie your history prior to being insured with them)

    4) You only have to pay the excess if you are at fault. As long as they get reimbursed by the third party you won't have to pay the excess.

    5) Points/convictions (including drink/driving) make no difference to your premiums

    6) They don't do NCD.

Guess what the catch is!! (Or rather how much it is)

You could try Co-operative, they didn't come up in the confused, moneysupermarket etc results, or if they did not with a favourable quote but they were the cheapest for my wifes and my own car insurance when I went directly on their website for some reason.

I also got £75 and £65 cashback respectively on TopCashBack :D

You could try Cornhill Direct.... I'm 27 and when i got cover for my cooper s they only quoted me £600 with a £250 compulsory excess.... i was very impressed. I did some background reseacrh and found out then when i changed the colour from red to silver, my premium dropped by 10%... the paint job only cost me £150 so i think that's a bargain!!
