New House - New Phone

Hi.
Hope someone can help.
Just bought a house, it has the phone line and everything.
The seller has taken the phone number with them, so I need to get a new number.
They were with TalkTalk phone and broadband package.
So, do I have to go back to BT to get a new phone number for the house, if so, some people reckon this is free, some reckon it will cost me, so am very confused here as to what to do.
Also, any ideas on the best packages out there, don`t think I have cable in my area so I can rule out Virgin I think. Any recommended bundles out there, phone+broadband or phone, broadband and TV. Bearing in mind I need to get a new phone number for the house so I am unsure how to go about this.
Your help is very much appreciated.
Regards

BT should re-activate the line for you free of charge despite the fact that the line is/was Talk Talk's when last used.
Similarly, Talk Talk should also do so (it's already 'their' line anyway) but there's a good chance they're going to suggest all sorts of connection charges will apply.
Sky satellite TV will give you the widest choice and, if you're a new customer, the equipment and installation should be free (although they charge up to £60 'set-up fee' depending on the package you take).Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0 -
Hi again.
Apparently, as the line previously was with TalkTalk, they say I have to get the line reconnected with them at first, then take it from there.
They originally wanted £59.99 to reconnect and give me a new number.
I mention BT were doing it free at the moment, so they said they can set up the new phone line, and give me broadband for £29.99 which is what they charge for Broadband I think.
So, have I got to go with Talktalk in the first instance. Virgin emailed me back and basically said they they could not set up the phone number and I would need to go to BT. Its a mindfield of information and some of it seems to be ambigious.
I was hoping to compare packages for like Virgin, BT, TalkTalk and Sky to see which is most suitable, but I think I need to get one with TalkTalk as that who the last phone line was with before the seller of the house moved out.
Further help and info would be really good.
Regards

.
Be careful, Talk Talk will probably stitch you in to a long contract, their service is not the best available.0 -

It that was on the phone from their call centre get it in writing before you commit yourself, otherwise you may get a bill and denials that there was ever such an offer.0 -

Yeah I thought that, but I dont think I have a choice, its looking like I have to go back to Talktalk to get a new number, some people are saying there is no reason why they should charge for this, they should just give me a number, yet talktalk originally wanted £59.99 for the pleasure of givin me a new phone number, they have dropped that tyo £29.99, so am a little confused.

Thats a good point that, you would hope they would honor it, but you never know with TalkTalk. I can imagine this happening.

You don't have to take your BB with TT. Get them to reconnect you and for calls maybe, but plenty of better options for broadband. No free lunch, and no free laptop

That might be true if you are not on an LLU exchange, but if you are I think you cannot use anyone else for BB as no one else will see you as having a BT line which for most is a pre-requisite0 -
Hi Gazzebo69,
The fact the line was with TalkTalk previously does not mean that you have to activate the line with TalkTalk now. Any provider that offers a new line instalation/re-start service will be able to activate the service.
TalkTalk are offering new line instalation/re-starts at £29.99 in some cases so the information you received regarding this charge is correct. As ACDeag says if the line is going onto an LLU service then you can not take broadband with another provider but this would be provided inclusive with your voice plan fees with TalkTalk. The contract term for a new line instalation or line re-start is 24 months.
Cheers
