Couple of tech q's

Still learning......

Grateful for any input on 2 points please:

1/ Now installed o2 broadband up to 20mbs.Curious about internet speed i tested it on Thinkbroadband.com and Speedtest.net and in the space of minutes got a speed of 8mbs on thinkbroadband and 16mbs on speedtest.net. Why so much variation and is there any other site to test the speed please?

2/At the very top of your screen at the left corner are the 'left' and 'right' arrows to go backwards and forwards through web pages. Now inbetween those and the search bar just noticed a small down facing arrow which will show a history of sites visted. How do you delete these visted sites?

I know how to delete 'history' as in internet options but this will not delete the history when clicking this little arrow.

Hope this makes sense.Thanks

    1. You might get a diffrent speed depending on how far the server you are downloading/uploading from is away from you. Your o2 internet package is upto 20 meg, this dosn't mean you will get 20 meg, it all depends on how far you are away from your exchange or if your telephone wires can handle it.

    2. I think i understand what you mean here, as in you delete your histroy but you can still press the back button to go back to the previous site, yeah? The way to fix this is to restart internet explorer or firefox or whatever browser you use. Just close it, and open it again.

    Hope this helps.
  • on part two.

WilliC is part right in how to solve it, the little arrow next to it, actually shows all the pages in yoru back history. If you open a new tab and close the old one, you have no back history as it is effectively a new browsing session

The servers you connect to can only handle a certain bandwidth. If this is exceeded, the speed you can connect to them will reduce.

What you want to do is measure your Internet connection speed, but the speed you see depends on the test server's connection and Internet congestion too.

It's not really feasible to isolate your own connection to get a true figure, but the test servers can give you a good idea - particularly if you compare the speeds of a number of different servers.

Thanks all...but would still like to know which other sites offer speed tests?

Regards that small arrow i think i understand. If after the browsing session, for instance, you just close the web pages then start browsing again then that little arrow only shows the current pages that you have visited whereas 'history' shows evrything visited....:T
  • There are so many factors the influence broadband speed, getting hung up on the numbers becomes a full time obsession for some people... You have broadband, it works, the best thing is to live with it. Your speed will change from hour to hour, day to day and also depending where you connect to. The thing to remember is the phrase the ISPs love... 'Up to XXmbps' which means that you are not paying for 20mbps but a service that is capable of a theoretical maximum.
