Debit card additional holder

Hello

Is there such a current account that allows you to have a debit card for the account holder and an additional person? Rather like credit card companies do.

We would set up a joint account, but my partner has rather a poor credit rating right now, and fear it would pull my rating down.

Ta

James

No. And you are right in your fear of having a joint account with a person with poor credit history.

you could set up a credit card with an extra card to be paid in full by a Direct Debit
  • Rats! We already have a credit card, we need a debit card for buying items in shops which do not accept credit cards.
  • As all debit cards will either be Visa or Mastercard any shop that accepts debit cards will accept credit cards and vice versa.

No. For example, Aldi accept all debit cards and don't accept any credit cards.
BTW Mastercard debit cards in UK are in fact Maestro/Switch/Solo. Visa debit cards are Visa Electron and used to be Visa Delta until Delta logo disappeared recently. However all debit cards still have bold white 'DEBIT CARD' logo on the front side.
  • Lidl and Aldi are exactly the places we go when we have this problem :-)
    Also Costco

Well, I have used my Egg money card in my local Lidl (Glasgow) but i don't know about Aldi but I know Costco still only takes debit cards. But apparently they (Costco) take personal cheques without a cheque card!

Other possible options include the Woolwich Card Saver account and NatWest first reserve savings account. They are both savings accounts with debit cards (solo/electron) - I'm unsure of risk with a 'poor credit' partner on these type of accounts, as they don't have credit facilities as such.
