I've no idea what I want to do. When I left school I worked as a bit of an office dogs body for a few years, then went on to office manager/payroll and basic accounts for a music comapny/builders/pharmacy (was a family run group of buisnesses - very varid work), then onto department manager in a department store until I left to have DD1.....I ran my own childminding business for 3 years too but feel really out of touch with modern offices. Don't want to go back to shop work, don't want to work with kids....don't want to work at all really but I suppose I should show willing.

The pain of it is that I'd be more than willing to do some courses to get me back into the swing of things but as I don't get any benefits I don't qualify for any help towards the cost and can't really afford to pay out for courses until I'm working...catch 22.

Sounds like you need to find a wee workplace like mine... somewhere you can rebuild your skills without entering a modern workplace... i came from a modern brandspanking new buzzwordy office, into this looks like a taxi cab office waiting room (no sal, not bournemouth airport) where everything is a bit more undepartmental and undermanaged.......

i love it here.... suits me down to the ground!

You see, some of us were trying to politely avoid the 'hole' jokes or anything about balls.. at least for the first date... :rotfl:

Ooooh Mazster, that sounds promising ;):D :j

Pooky, would you like to get back into office work then if you could update your skills a bit? (obviously in the absence of a job as a jaffa cake tester ;)) What sort of courses would you want/ need to do, computer stuff?

I enjoyed my office managers job, I loved the fact that it was 3 different companies so I could be ordering promo t-shirts and doing mail shots to radio stations in the morning and ordering tenna lady in the afternoon and squeezing in the payroll for the builders once a week... I suppose I'd like that sort of thing on a flexible part time basis..if that sort of thing exsists.

I'm sure something will crop up but in the mean time i'd like to have been able to do some sort of excel and word course (DD1 is a whizz on spreadsheets, I don't even know where to start)

What I need is a huge dose of confidence and a bucket full of gumption.

Why does everything take so long. Totally fed up with all this sorting!

That does sound like a fun job - so you're looking for something with 'varied' in the job description!

What about having a look at the Microsoft online tutorials - the first 'get to know Excel' one is here - http://office.microsoft.com/training/training.aspx?AssetID=RC012005461033 - they're a good starting point.. and Google for some more similar stuff online? I taught myself Excel from stuff like that and it was one of the main reasons for me getting my first office job!
