Can anyone confirm that Windows 7 sold in the UK will contain IE 8?

I've copied the relevant info from the Amazon software team below.

"The versions of Windows 7 sold in the UK will include Internet Explorer 8."

Does this mean it will install automatically when Windows 7 is being installed? This info was released on Aug 12th, however I was away so am only seeing it now!

As I understand it, Microsoft have reached an agreement with the EU and the european version will now include IE8.

  • So it was all just a load of hot air that Microsoft produced to make them seem like they were obeying the EU courts, when it never would have mattered if they had included it from the start?

Does that mean we can now upgrade from Vista or XP in the true sense of the word?

It was suggested that the EU version would now have multiple browsers available to choose from during the install.

So it is still uncertain if you can do an upgrade using thse disks from Vista, but there is no direct upgrade path from XP to 7.
  • Yeah I had heard about the multiple browsers option but it read like there was only going to be IE and if you wanted to use something else, then you downloaded it later.

I guess all will become clear when it is released on 22nd October.

I think their agreement with the EU means that when you install Win7 you get a message informing you of the various browsers you can install.

I believe the pre-order versions are all full versions not upgrades, don't know if they will introduce an upgrade version for the european market.

The Amazon blog also said that an ungrade version was to be released, but at some date after the initial release. The product we get in the UK is to be the same one that every other country gets. And going by that Microsoft website, E versions won't actually be produced.

Would that not suggest then that it will just be IE that will be included, as that's all America will get, and apparently we get the same version now?

More than likely. With the very first thing it does after installation to be connect to Windows Update to download some form of ballot screen with a choice of browsers to install.

I'm just surprised the option is to use Windows Update to download IE8 in order for you to download Firefox ;)
