I have over 20gig of avi data files which I want to burn to dvd and give to a relative to watch on their dvd player connected to a tv.

Problem - a the size and b the software I tried is mostly trying to convert the avi files ot video format. Fine but its going to take hours to do plus lots of dvd disks (I have single layer 4.3gig ones) and with only at most 240mins playing capacity.

I was hoping to get some way to use a data cd or convert a format that keeps the quality of the videos as well not requiring conversion of the avi to dvd format.

Any ideas appreciated.

Do you know what video formats their DVD player supports?

I think its not a sophisticated dvd player, it plays standard video dvds, mp3 cd but not data video.

i burnt a data dvd as a test.

Are there dvd players for tv which can read data videos? I could recommend that.

I am just burning the avi files as pure data dvd - I just havent got time to convert to VOBs etc - takes too long and file size doubles - at which rate going to need 20 DVDs (4.3 gig ones) probably.

How exactly was the video encoded? Even if they have a player capable of processing highly compressed video it may not be in the correct format. AVI is just a container; the contents can be pretty much anything.

Video codec is Xvid Mpeg-4 and audio is mp3.

here's an idea... get your relative to pick up one of those cheapo dvd players that support DivX (approx 30 GBP). e.g.

eBuyer - Xenta Divx HDMI DVD player 1080P DIVX/XVID/MP4 with USB playback @24.99GBP

Then you can bung your avi's straight on to your DVDs and hand those over without (potential) conversion! Also, if you find the eBuyer one above suitable then it claims to play from USB devices too....

    Problem solved! ;)

I'm sorry, I don't have any experience with these DVD/DivX players especially ones that can read from USB devices too... You may wanna take a look at the forums, esp the thread about this product. The URL is:

A few issues to note about the usb functionality that you'll prob want clearing up before parting with any cash would be:

    - If using ext usb HDD, then the size limit of the actual HDD e.g. 500gb
    - File system e.g. fat/fat32/ntfs
    - File/Directory structure that the player recognises

An easy option is to copy the AVI's to DVD disc (around 5 in your case) and let them watch them on a PC. This can be connected to the TV if they want to do.

I do this all the time with DVD's. As I travel overseas a lot, I don't want to be carrying a load of discs with me, so I simply copy my DVD's onto a USB HDD (you only need the 'video' directory) and watch them on my laptop :)
