Cash on Pickup

Hi, just looking for some guidance as not experienced in these things........

I'm selling a item which currently has no bids and is local pickup only.
Someone has asked if they can pay cash on pickup as they dont usually use ebay and havent set up a paypal account (their feedback is zero, ebay account opened April09).

It would mean I would have to end the listing early... by doing this am I breaking any rules or leaving myself vunerable in any way?

  • What id do is get them to come and look at it, if they want to buy it on the spot, let them do so. Only after the exchange of items and money has taken place should you cancel youre eay listing. OR ... edit the listing or submit a revision stating that the item was sold elsewhere.

If they come and look at it, and dont buy ... leave the ebay listing up.

You are entitled to delete a listing if there are no bids, ive done it before.

  • Cash is much safer than Paypal when it comes to collection only items.

If they are offering a decent price then bite their hand off if they are willing to pay cash on collection.

Do NOT take PayPal payment under ANY circumstances if the buyer collects an eBay sale. If you do, you run the risk that they will file an Item Not Received claim, and you will not be able to provide PayPal with proof of delivery, so the buyer would win the claim, leaving you without the item AND without the money. ONLY take cash.
  • Sadly, I don't think it's allowed to flatly refuse Paypal on an eBay sale. It must still be given as an option, however I think it's ok to state a preference for cash.

As I said, cash is much safer than Paypal when it comes to collection only items.

Just end the auction and get them and their cash around and get what ever it is gone.

    Ebay's policy on it:
    Misleading & Discouraging Payments
Sellers who state in their listing that they accept certain payment methods must not selectively offer those payment methods to buyers or discourage buyers from using those payment methods.
This means that sellers must always accept payment from buyers through the payment methods they have selected in their Payment Details section of their listing, including PayPal, and must not act in any way to discourage buyers from paying by these methods. For example, you may not insist that a buyer pay a surcharge, if paying through a certain payment method.
Breaches of any part of this policy may result in a range of actions including:
    • Listing cancellation
    • Forfeit of eBay fees on cancelled listings
    • Limits on account privileges
    • Loss of PowerSeller status
    • Account suspension
Given how ebay seem to selectively enforce their rules and make up rules as they go along, I'd imagine that they'd count 'stating a preference for cash' as 'discouraging buyers from using paypal'.

"This means that sellers must always accept payment from buyers through the payment methods that earn ebay extra money on top of the inflated fees you've already parted with, ebay earning extra money is an important safety buyer/selller measure and it is not because we're greedy. Anyone who does not take paypal is a terrorist/money launderer/theif, always use paypal for everything or you might die."

Have them come round to view the item and if they want it, accept the cash from them, then just end the listing on ebay.

I did the same the other day when i was selling the babies moses basket and stand.
