Returning damaged shoes - what are my rights?

Hi everyone, thanks for reading this.

Last weekend I bought a pair of shoes from a well known high street store in central London. Upon taking them home, I realised that there was some serious damage to the shoe, where there was a cut in the shoe. Obviously I was pretty annoyed by this, and as it was late shopping this evening I went to one of the company's branches in Bromley, where I live.

I was told that because it's not a manufacturing fault, they were not able to take it back as it is not resellable. They also said they understood that they are unworn, and that I need to go back to the store I purchased them from to sort it out with them.

What I would like to know is, what are my rights in this issue? I have frankly wasted time sorting this issue out today, and will have to travel back to central London at some point at extra cost to sort this out.

I'm pretty upset and annoyed at how I have been treated, as I feel like I am somehow at fault and have a pair of damaged £30 shoes that I cannot return.

Any help appreciated, thanks.

  • Hi hun,
What does it say on your reciept about return policy?
    Are they fit for purpose?
Basically go in to the shop and be polite with the staff. Explain that you noticed the damage when you got home, and were upset as you were really looking forward to wearing them. Tell them that you would like to exchange them like for like, and see what they say.
If you get no joy ask for the manager, and say how disappointed you were to discover the damage. Don't feel that you are to blame, you're not!
