Losing credit cards and subsequent fines...

I lost my credit card so reported it. It vanished from my online banking and was replaced with a credit card with a new number and the outstanding balance owed (£20.00) was added to my most recent statement.
Did not realise that this meant the bank cancelled my direct debit to pay it off my credit card each month.
I also think that from the way the statement is set out it makes it look as if the £20 owed from my card from before I lost it has simply been added to the next months bill i.e. at the top it says 'full payment due by 2/9/09' and 'minimum payment due by 12/9/9'
However as the £20 from before I lost it should usually have been paid off 2/8/9 or 12/8/9 the bank has been kind enough to add a £12 charge and £0.40 interest (i suppose i can live with the interest)

Does that make sense?
What I want to know is whether I am within my rights to argue with the bank that
a) they ought to have told me if the DD would not be transferred to new card and needed to be set up again and
b) there was no information on my account statement to suggest that I owed payment - the way it is set out looks as if all due in Sept
and therefore they have no right to charge me or charge me interest

I have already sent message to bank just waiting for a reply...just thought I would post so I can worry about whilst waiting/argue further with them if necessary.

    Yup, worth arguing :)

Have a look at some of the other posts from people who missed their payment for the advice given - same applies on what you'd like as an outcome, you've got good grounds to argue this is a one-off and not unreasonable to ask for a bit of flexibility from them.

  • i think its tough arguing with a bank in these kind of situations..it is quite certain that the banks would not listen to you and do what they like best..
