Landlord has sold house a few days before we are due to move in.

Landlord told us when viewing that although the house had been on the market they had no more interest in selling and wanted to rent until the market picked up again. We said we wanted it for 2 years and paid a holding deposit-landlady all agreeable-great to have a nice family who will look after it blah blah blah.

Anyway due to move next week-all packed up (nearly) excited children who had picked their rooms-phone call this morning from letting agent-landlady has had an offer and the house is no longer available.

My children sobbed their hearts out when I told them-we have had a couple of bad years and this was our fresh start I am so angry with this woman I could scream. We hadn't signed the tenancy as letting agent said we had to do that on the day of moving. I wouldn't rent from this person now anyway when i realise what a lying c*w she is but do we have any comeback on her at all? What about treating people like sh*t does that count in law in this country I bet not. Compensation for our time/trouble and heartache and seeing my kids heartbroken-not enough money in the world for that.:mad::mad::mad:

I hope she sleeps well tonight .....I couldn't.

i am so sorry to hear you have been treated so badly - its worse when the children were so excited ..... You are right, there is no compo for you - but if you choose to go to a different letting agent i would ask for ALL your fees back as it was the LL who pulled out not you.

There will be someone much nicer round the corner for you ... chin up

Letting agent has already offered us our fees back if we end up renting with someone else-she was as angry as us to be honest-but no doubt she will loose money as well.

if LA has offered a full refund - at least they are being honest and ethical - stay with them and see what else is on offer - they are bound to give you good service second time around

I wonder why they said that as it perfectly reasonable and possible for both landlord an tenant to sign the tenancy agreement before hand. I've always done this as leaving signing till the day of the move could leave you homeless if the LL pulls out. If you go with that LA again I'd query this with them.
  • Oh hun I can only feel for you, I've been panicing something like this was going to happen at my property I'm due to move into tuesday, hey theres still time, but do feel better having signed tenancy agreement today and paying deposit.

Personally I would try another LA purely out of morals. I've got a son too and hes dead excited about moving, god only knows how hed be if we didnt.

Wishing you loads of luck in finding a quick replacement.

Also whats ur current housing sitauation? Are you in rented and had given your notice?

I had this too. I had paid a holding deposit and the agent's representative made me put a start date on the holding form. He actually forced a date out of me ... then they had to take up references etc and the LL wanted to sort out a few things at the place, and it was dragging on and on, they couldn't tell me when the LL would say I could move in, right up to the last minute I wasn't sure it'd be OK. Then I signed the tenancy 10 minutes before I moved in and just 24 hours after I knew it was all OK/going ahead ... and 6 days after the date the original guy made me put on the booking form.

Luckily I was able to stay on where I had been on a day-to-day basis or I'd have been in a hotel for 6 days wondering if I was going to move in or not.

They really do have you over a barrel.
