India's a great place to visit - I'm going green with envy but really pleased for you, you'll have a wonderful time.
(Although now I come to think about it, the food's terrible, you're bound to be ill, get heatstroke etc etc. So if you have a holiday that you need to offload coz it's just not the one for you, I'm top of the list to take it off your hands.;) - I'd be doing you a favour, really I would.)
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Well done Polo,
Hope you're feeling bit better after your op this gives you something to look forward to. Sure you'll have a fantastic time0 -
Visa - they've outsourced.
http://in.vfsglobal.co.uk/
Even if you go in person, you still need to submit the application on line. Sounds daft, but I had to go to the visa place, find an internet cafe, submit it, then go back to the visa place!
Vaccinations - ask at your GP surgery- they should have a travel clinic that gives free advice. Some of the on-line ones you have to pay for. You may have to pay for a private prescription for some of the vaccinations or anti-malarials if you need them. Some are on the NHS and some aren't.
Nor sure about the best time of year - look at the brochure and the most expensive prices are generally the best weather wise. Or hoik yourself over to tripadviser - they might have something.
And practice your bartering, or stick to the fixed price shops (my preference as I'm terrible at haggling.)
I usually get the lonely planet or rough guide books from out of the library and take those with me - too mean to buy my own! They also give advice on the best time to go.
