2 very silly questions ...

... if you're read my previous post you'll see I'm a first time cat owner, got 2 kittens yesterday.

Can I ask some really silly questions?

(1) The cat litter tray - we are scooping up poo as they do it, and putting it in an old bag in the bin, but how often should I change the litter itself?

(2) They are having half a sachet of Whiskas kitten food at a time - what should I do with the other half? I've been putting it inside a resealable sandwich bag in the fridge, then when I need it, I pop it in the microwave for 10 seconds to take the chill off it - is this OK?

See, told you they were silly questions!!!!

Put up some pics and we'll tell you lol...

Litter should do a few days without needing to be changed completely if you're taking the poos out. If it's clumping litter (as in you can get the wees too) then a little bit longer.

Can't think off the top of my head that there would be a problem with microwaving their food- my cats prefer things at 'live mouse' temperature than cold, so as long as it's not hot it should be ok.

  • Thanks shell_girl, here is a pic of them (they seem to prefer sitting in the litter tray to their basket, LOL!!)

ohhh look at them wee cuties, they are gorgeous :)

all i do with my litter is scoop it out, then when it gets to wet replace it with fresh and i dont see any problem in microwaving there food. i used to do the half a sachet thing then i moved onto kitten loaf tins, you can pick them up in asda.. i used to just buy those and then get a plastic lid for opened tins and put it in the fridge like that, but take it out an hour before feeding them it, as microwaving tin is not a clever idea lol as i found out :)

I don't bother doing anything with the other half, felix says on the packet it's designed to be left down and the meat is fairly sterile if you squeeze the pack rather than sticking a spoon in. As they are probably having 3 / 4 meals a day it wont be left that long, I just fold down the top and store at room temp (any longer than that I'd keep it in the fridge). With two it wont be long before they are eating a whole pouch between them at each sitting. If you are worried about hygeine I'd see if they'd take it cold before you start faffing around. The less fussy habits they get into now, the better, as you may be 'cooking them dinner' for the next 18 years!

i would think a kitten would be eating half a pouch per sitting, so one pouch should feed both of them per meal, so you shouldnt have any leftover that needs putting in the fridge

Depending on which catlitter you are using will depend on how often it needs changing. Dirt based ones will need totally replacing at least once a week, whereas something like Catsan can really go a good week or two, without evening looking used

    aaawwww cute kittens :D

we got a kitten too, on saturday!

i just take out poos and as much wee soaked gravel as i can every day, will do a complete change when it looks like it needs changing

ours started on kitten biscuits but we've had to add wet food to her diet, she currently eats 5-10g dry biscuits which are always available and about 1/4 of a pouch 3 times a day. i've been putting open pouches in a sandwich bag in the fridge and then in the micro for 5 secs before serving

When Lily needs a litter tray indoors I use Tesco Value litter, scoop poos as I see them, do a complete litter change and wash the tray every 2-3 days. She only has a litter tray when poorly and can't go out, otherwise she has a flap to come and go as she pleases.

I store her tinned wet food in the fridge in this kind of weather and it being cold has never bothered her (didn't bother Coco either who is no longer with us)
I wouldn't heat food for a cat (unless specifically told to by a vet when poorly) because you start the habit now they may want it warm all the time.
If they don't like it cold they will leave it and come back to it later when it's naturally warmed up to room temperature.
