apple mac notebook

I purchased this 2 years ago, didn't buy the apple care only to find that the charger stopped working so had to replace this about 6 months ago which was about £60.00 now my laptop keeps intermittantly shutting down , both of these are big issues with mac and its likely I would need to get a logic board which will cost £160.00, I purchased a mac because I thought it was a good product and further research regarding my issues seems as though this continues to happen, and I paid around £700.00 ahh!

Is there anything I can do, I really don't want to spend out more money and scared something will happen again!

You are vague as to the model of Apple laptop involved but what you describe is symptomatic of a fault Apple discovered with nVidia 8600M GT graphics cards installed on MacBooks Pro between May 2007 and September 2008 having been improperly manufactured.

The wrong bonding glue was used by nVidia and the graphics eventually fail, rendering the Mac unable to start. It begins intermittently and then, after a few days or weeks the failure becomes total.

Apple sued nVidia and is offering (currently) a three-year warranty for faults caused by this defect, even if the AppleCare has expired.

One of my own 2007 MacBooks Pro failed in this way last April and my local Apple Service Centre replaced its motherboard without charge. It was, in fact, still under extended AppleCare warranty but he commented that even if it hadn't been, the extended warranty arising from this fault would have covered it.

I expect my other MacBook Pro to suffer the same failure, sooner or later, and to have to have its own motherboard replaced similarly and without charge.

Read this and see if it applies to your Mac laptop.

Apple also has an extended warranty for chargers that fail (at the MagSafe plug) for which you might have been eligible.

You castigate Apple but in fact it has been very reasonable in resolving such issues.

This pertains to the OP's main problem.

  • hello thanks for the quick response - I purchased this may 2007 and its macbook 13" inch its not the pro.. details are

    Chipset Model: GMA 950
    Type: Display
    Bus: Built-In
VRAM (Total): 64 MB of shared system memory
    Vendor: Intel (0x8086)
    Device ID: 0x27a2

On the link its only for the pro but it seems to have the same issues, when I search on line its seems that others are having the same problem i've tried it without the battery as I know that doesn't last for long but it still does the same - its seems to go faster if I watch utube or tv online..

and they never told me about the charger either - I thought once I bought this it would last for years! Big mistake!
  • oh and when it switches off the laptop is boiling I have to leave it to cool.

From what you explain further, it sounds more like an overheating problem.

Are the fans running properly and do you ever obstruct access to the air vents?

(Computer manufacturers phased out the word "laptop" and replaced it with the word "notebook" because using them on one's lap can block the airflow and cause them to overheat - to the detriment of both the user's thighs and the computer itself.)

It's difficult to know just how hot you mean by "boiling" but the components are designed to withstand considerable heat. If it's getting over 100% C, though, that's cause for concern.

Its CPU is designed to slow everything right down to protect itself if it gets too hot.

Open it up (it's out of warranty, anyway) and check the fans and vents (which may have become clogged with dust).

If it's still overheating, take it to an Apple Service Centre and get them to check it out. They will know if the fault qualifies for free repair under an extended component warranty from Apple and they will be more keen than an Apple Retail Store to carry out the work at Apple's expense.

AppleCare extended warranty is well worth buying - not, perhaps, immediately but within the first year, after the cost of the Mac itself has been digested - and it can be purchased cheaply on eBay!

  • Hi I've researched into this further I can put links on unfortunately as I'm new but apparently loads of people are receiving the same problems just tap in RSS Macbook in google and you will see. As far as I can see its seems to be a problem with the heat sink, I will ask for the service centre to check the fan as well as I don't want to open due to the sales goods law which advises you have a right to request repair 6 years from purchase if you can prove that there is a fault that is not caused by yourself, but hopefully service centre or genius bar can check this. What I would say is that the problem happened after apple store replaced the top cover when I went in re charger I wonder if they have done anything by mistake. What a nightmare.. with the fan it always come on really fast when switched on makes loads of noise then it calms down with 5mins do you think it may not be working properly?

Sorry with all the questions but you are very helpful!
