Air vent in my living room.

Our gas engineer just came round to fix our back boiler (pilot light went out)
we have a contract with glow worm.
he wouldn't touch the boiler as he said our Air Vent is illegal (it has the ability to slide closed)...
he didnt give me any advice as to how to get this fixed?
he just said it should be changed.
what should i do?...who would fix it...a general builder?.
and what type of vent would i need.
thanks

I'd be interested to see if he can quote a regulation. It's inadvisable to have a closable vent, or anything in the vent that could get blocked, but it doesn't make the installation unsafe per-se. The regs say "cannot be used without causing a danger", not "might be used".
However, if you want a quiet life, you can get vent covers in any of the DIY sheds. Finding one in the correct size might be problematic.0 -
thanks for the advice adrian....
he said he couldn't fix our boiler pilot light or even look at the boiler whilst the vent was against regulations "company policy"....he also said something about the outside covering as well!
but i was annoyed as i had taken the day off work to wait for him to come and then he wouldnt even fix my boiler!!0 -
drill a small hole in the (open position) vent and insert a small screw. thatll stop it from being closed.

thanks for the advice0 -
That's a weird policy this company has.

Even if you had a fixed vent you could easily tape over it which I have seen done before :rolleyes:0 -

Good afternoon: Contact Gas Safe Register for clarification on this issue as the advice given by others is unsafe. All RGIs are required to follow the protocols detailed in the 'Gas Industry Unsafe Situation Procedures: 6th Edition'. More on ventilation here
Stay safe.

...except that the RGI in this instance, if the OP reported correctly, hasn't.0
