I guess you want to stop random programs, like printer accessories, skype, msn messenger from starting up with your PC.
There are a few choices, each individual program should have an option to turn off automatic start up. Normally by opening the program and going into setting you will find a checkbox or something like this which will allow you to turn off automatic startup off.
You can also go to
Start (Windows logo)
Programs
Startup
and delete any programs you dont want to startup with your computer here. (Obviously be careful what you delete though)
or another option would be to add some more ram in the computer as this can considerably speed up startup
or start using the hibernate function. Whereby you start your computer once and then close all unwanted programs. Then when you want to turn your computer off, turn it to hibernate. Dont worry about it using power as hibernate is different to sleep, as hibernate saves the state of your computer to hard disk and when you turn it back on it will be where you left off.
Although a fresh restart is recommended every now and again.0 -
Windows XP: Start > Run > enter: msconfig and hit the 'Enter' key.
Vista: Start and enter msconfig in the Search field
Go to the Startup tab and 'untick' whichever you don't want to start automatically when you start your machine.0
