Sorry, thanks for providing the explanation.

So yeah, the CPC is the amount that an advertiser pays for that click, for some products this can be tens of pounds! Car Insurance is the classic example. So if you ran a site about car insurance, people would have to buy your traffic at around £10 per click - obviously very lucrative! But highly competitive, so not something an amateur should go into.

That said I have often thought that if you are a super car nut then you could build a forum around a particular model and then get your members to buy insurance through an affiliate link each year. With a few thousand loyal members it would be a nice income. People would come to your site because of your maintenance videos, modification guides, repair tips, etc. It would be much more focused than a more generic car forum, would have a strong community spirit amongst the owners, and although many models now have such forums - there are still plenty of gaps for budding affiliates to fill! (if you end up doing this, a link of thanks back would be appreciated ;)!)

What else do you need to know about CPC?
    • I will also add that Google gives you an average CPC value and as an adsense publisher you only get a % of that. So just because the average is £10 per click it doesn't mean you'll ever see that
    • The CPC you get is also dependent on the quality of traffic you get. If you get a million untargeted people coming to your site becuase of a funny photo you put up - this is a bad thing! Google will server 10,000 ad impressions and get no click throughs, Google will then think your site's traffic is poor and will pay you much less per click than the average. It is far better to have 10 hits with a 20% click rate than 1000 hits and 0.2%. The reason for this is obvious, the system would breakdown if publishers were able to send over poorly converting untargeted traffic and Google would lose advertisers. The whole quality system they have implemented is a cunning safeguard.
So some of my sites have very few visitors a day, if any, but the ones that do arrive are highly targeted and much more likely to click through. This is good for me, the visitor, and it's good for the advertiser. Win-win-win. And I get a pound or two in the bank. Not a lot, but multiply that by 365 days and 10 sites... :D

    Hi Susie,

Trying to get my head round this CPC bit.

I have a niche keyword that has a domain available that I think could do rather well.
Its CPC according to the Google keyword costs $24.41
I presume that is quite good but how do I know for sure?

Also, this doesn't mean I will get $24.41 per visitor does it?
    All a bit confused!
  • Hey all, just read the thread and it sounds fantastic. Although my worry is, how easy to learn is this for a newbie like myself. I dont know much about creating sites.

I believe it is based on the average, IF someone actually clicks through and buys, obviously you will not get $24 if someone just clicks on an advert to stop people like yourself using a friends computer lol

Forums tend to be a lot easier to build and maintain for me, you just have to find something that you are supremely interested in and can excel at.

I have been at a forum for 3 years now and have learnt a lot, it is time for me to move on and try my own now...

Many hosting companies help you to build a site with their packages but I would advise not rushing into something like insurance or flights until you have a lot of experience, professionals would eat you alive. Instead find something to build a small forum around, the costs will not be great and you will gain experience and loyal readers, especially if you can keep them coming back with blog posts that hold their interest.

I would suggest reading warriorforum.com, they specialise in building and monetising sites and you will be able to pick up a wealth of information free :)

Oh, and your website isn't indexed by google either, which could be a slight disadvantage....

It would get reported savemoney but I hate this MSE method of reporting where you have to waste your time with email...I wonder if he is going to find himself banned permanently for refusing to stop advertising?

He has edited one post but sadly not the other, but if he persist he may get banned as they soon get fed up of complaints

Yeah you not trying to spam your website ;). If you want my honest opinion - you need to do some serious work, firstly your picture is so cheesy if you want people to sign up you need to be standing by you newly driven out of the show room porsche, with at leat two beautiful women in the car and a few pictures of just a small fraction of your enormous real estate portfolio that you purchased just months after setting up your first affiliate link

And there is nothing to keep me interested - it's one page, you need some fake testimonials on how Rob changed my life forever, how I told my boss to F U, how it "was like winning the lottery" as soon as my affiliate income reached £1 billion per second. etc etc.

Good luck on your adventure :o

Ok, the above isn't entirely serious, but making money from ads/afiliate links takes far more work than a normal job to start with and nearly as much once you get going.

Just my 2 clicks worth ;)

Fair enough on the joking but there are people here and everywhere as you know who cant! get jobs

There is no harm in teaching people how to make some money online whilst they look for a job, or look to supplement their income. If you know what you are doing, it is very easy to build up a website and have it on autopilot given the right foundation.

The website is not indexed because I only created it a couple of days ago and i am not looking to rank it in Google to find people who are legitimately looking to bring in some more money given some work and time. There are a insane amount of spam links, sites up looking to trick people into money and I am certainly not one of them.

I have a couple of people who have paid an interested and do hope given a few weeks they will come back and say thankyou on the forum to demonstrate you do not have to be a chip on the soulder, sales orientated spammer to help people

And by the way the picture was taken in our local pub garden last year and i am sorry if i look cheesy and not Tom Cruise sitting next to my next Porsche

I cant believe what a cold reception I have got from wanting to help people, just because I had some links. Fair enough its the rules being a human being, i did not realise and have taken them down.

I appreciate there is a rules section but being an IT guy and male, i never read a manual :)

Apologises for being normal and not Superman, although..maybe i should change my website picture for last years party costume for a more lighthearted reception
