inexpensive but good quality beds

My son is about to move into new digs (in north London) where he will have to buy all the furniture. He is looking for a good quality but cheap bed; in fact to begin with, a mattress will do. Any suggestions for where to look?

Ikea, Ikea, Ikea! All decent stuff and the springs in the matresses don't poke you even on their cheapest sprung mattress.Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

Ditto ikea, we bought a "king size" mattress for £80 and the bed was £150 or something - and neither of those were the cheapest option. That was for the spare bed, but sometimes I prefer it to our near £300 mattress.
Just be warned that you will struggle with fitted sheets - do buy one from Ikea as their beds and mattresses are not UK standard sizes. Duvets and Pillows go over them just fine though
I love surprises!0 -
An Ikea bed pretty much limits you to an Ikea mattresses. My cheap Ikea foam mattress was horrible, can't comment on the others.0

If you go for a really good quality mattress, you can get the cheapest of cheap beds and it'll still feel great.
This article http://www.guardian.co.uk/money/2005/sep/18/observercashsection.theobserver4 lists a load of furniture warehouses where you can get good quality stuff at big discounts. I got a fabulous quality mattress from Your Furnished in Stansted a few years ago. I seem to remember they can deliver, but are really set up for you to come in buy things and take them away then and there.
It's quite an old article so it could be out of date - so there might be more out there now.0 -
There are very mixed reviews for Ikea beds and mattresses, and you have to remember that they aren't UK sizes.
Try googling cheap beds. Then if you stay away from the big brands you will get far more for your money, and better quality too.0 -

Yes of course, be careful to find the ones that sell at a good price already, and then get money back on top of a good deal!
It can be done, so go have fun finding those bargains!0
