AS B&Q are doing 15% off over the next week - i need a "general" answer to a question... this would save us around £200-250 so a substantial saving...

We have a small-ish bathroom with the bath taking up one side and units down another

Now.... the bath is 700mm wide...
the sink unit is 600mm wide and the toilet is 570mm wide...

the replacment cabinets (from their modular bathroom range) at B&Q are 600wide each so there is going to be an issue with fitting it in standard form....

Would a bathroom fitter be able or even willing (i know it would depend on the fitter - hence why im after a general answer for the moment) to cut down the toilet unit to make it fit - this is what I belive has been done before by the builders....

Just measured my toilet unit (concealed back to the wall ) its 500mm wide .

If it had to be cut down from a 570 ?? would have accepted a plain white panel .
So , yes to your question:rolleyes:

Shouldnt be too difficult to find 30mm. If the units have 15mm sides take both sides off the toilet unit attach it directly to the wall by the door on the right hand side and directly to the vanity unit on the left and then just cut the toilet unit worktop and front sections shorter. I'd be wary of reducing the internal dimensions of the unit in case you have trouble fitting a cistern in.

However having said all that i wouldn't buy your bathroom suite from B&Q...plumbers hate them and some will run a mile if you mention B&Q as they know it means there could be probs! Get branded goods instead such as Ideal Standard, Twyford bathrooms etc.
Alternatively get a close-coupled toilet instead .... the hassle i've had building my own toilet cabinet i would go for this option at the moment!!

i dont think we will be buying the whole suite from B&Q - just the cabinets as they are the only ones we have found that we like the look off, dont cost a fortune AND have enough room underneith to run the soil pipe!

the only issue is size of the cabinets would be around 20-30mm too big to fit with a 700mm bath...

I did think about getting rid of the units and have them "freestanding" as such - however after thinking about it and looking back at some of the similar houses we looked at that had similar sized bathrooms without cabinets - it didnt look right
  • It can be done but I wouldn't go for B&Q modular cabinets as they are so overpriced. Why not go for something like these:

They arrive fully built and also no messing around with cutting bits off so you will save on labour costs. I have used both companies for various items.

the first one - there is no space at the bottom for the soil pipe to run - they sell them at bathrooms at crazy prices down the road from - shame realls as they are rather good value

but the 2nd one ive not seen before - ta for the heads up - will do some digging :)

I do not reccomend cutting units down, Steam will get into the core and damage the unit

Some people must have peculiar bathing habits. I cut down a base unit to accept a very large ceramic sink. This was over 30 years ago. There has never been the slightest sign of any moisture affecting the cut. Mind you, we do not ever have any condensation in our bathroom. It has a powerful extractor fan and the water into the bath is always premixed with the cold to the actual temperature required. Thus, no steam coming from the taps.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.

had somebody around today and thanks to the suggested links above going for those and using a filler pannel to fill in any gaps between the bath instead of going for the B&Q ones and cutting them down!

also decided to move the taps and shower plumbing to the other side of the bath to allow us to go for a glass shower screen - that should be interesting when it comes to getting the quote lol

actualy - thinking about it - the pipework is going to be run through a party wall... - this means chasing out the wall (block construction) and then filled....

Will this require a party wall doodaah - or should it be fine? Of course - I will discuss with the neighbour before the work goes ahead - but is there any paperwork or anything official that needs completing?!
  • That's great, you will be pleased with them. They will send you the filler panel for free if you let them have the size. Also, if you are ordering them via ebay, don't forget to go through Quidco as you should get a fair bit of cashback.
