Are they allowed to show electorial roll info ?
Enjoy

I was horrified to discover on the b4u search.com site that my name and address came up. I truly thought that when you tick not to appear on the electorial register then it wont be made public. This should not be allowed. I'm very upset and angry.

I think people can access electoral roll information at libraries can they not?
Another point - to find your information they would have to have a name or know exactly where you live?Weight Loss - 102lb0 -
Anyone can walk into any local library and ask to see the electoral roll for that year where everyone is registered. This site isnt breaking any rules apart from the times when it lists people who have opted out of being listed in the electoral roll. Theres a link somewhere on the B4usearch site somewhere where you can have your details taken off.2008 Comping ChallengeWon so far - £3010 Needed - £230Debt free since Oct 20040

Try looking on https://www.192.com - you can find electoral details on this site too - I thought the electoral roll was a public record that anyone could access.Enjoy wrote:I was horrified to discover on the b4u search.com site that my name and address came up. Which is what the OP was making the point about. And that brings up the question of How the heck did they get the information? Because the council is legally bound not to sell that information onto third parties.0 -
I've just had my own and my partner's details removed from b4usearch but I fuming to discover that not only do 192.com have our details...they also have my 23 year old disabled son's.
From the minute son was included in the electoral register at 18, I made sure the box was ALWAYS ticked to ensure his details were never passed on. His disibilities mean that he is vulnerable to most things and would happily sign away his life not realising what he was doing, which is why I try to ensure his details are not widely available to marketing companies.
How else would his details be available if it wasn't down to the council?

Debtfreechick says in the other thread that the 2001 register did not have the tick box, would your son not have been on that register as 18 or above....maybe maybe not depending on when he turned 18 and when the electoral roll was taken.
How did you ask them for removal, did you follow their process including providing more info about yourself?
I want an address to write a recorded delivery letter to them.

The council can sell the lists to 3rd parties, under certain defined categories.
And, as long as the info was bought pre 2002, anyone could buy it and legally use it for any purpose. Sounds like they're not breaking the law, if the info predates 2002.Who has access to my personal details on the register
Until 1 December 2002, anyone could buy a copy of the electoral register to use for any purpose. But the law was changed to give you some choice about who can buy details of your name and address. There are now two versions of the register:
* the full version and the edited version.
The full version contains the names and addresses of all persons resident in District to vote at local and/or national elections. Anyone can look at this register under supervision but it can only be passed on for certain purposes. These are electoral purposes, law enforcement and by credit reference agencies. Use by credit reference agencies is only to check your name and address if you are applying for credit and to help stop money laundering. You do not have a choice about your name and address being included in the full version of the register.
The edited register is available for general sale and can be used for any purpose. You can choose not to be on it by ticking the opt out box on the annual registration form, on a re-registration form.I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0
