CD re-writer problem

Options
A friend's PC has a DVD/CD rewriter. For some time now it has failed to recognise that there is a CD in the drive, and rejects it, although it still accepts and writes to DVDs. She's tried all brands of CDs - any ideas?

Thanks!

I've had this problem, and similar ones before.

First question, is the drive an LG multilayer? I think the models 304 or something, these have a habit of this type of error.

It could be a problem with the software you are using, maybe it has not correctly detected the drive?
For example, Nero may often detect a DVD-RW drive as only a CD-RW drive, so it then requires you to re-recognise available drives.

Or it could be a system error, for example Windows may not be recognising the drive correctly.
This could be a driver error or even a firmware error.
Have you checked for the latest updates? Such as windows updates?
Or even, installed any updates recently? As this could be the cause of the problem.

I had a drive with a similar issue, I tried *everything*.
Different brands, updating firmware, downgrading firmware, registry settings, various drivers, etc.
It turned out not to be the OS, as my other DVD-RW drive worked fine, a friends also worked fine in mine.
I tried my drive in a friends PC and it wouldn't work either.

So it turned out that the drive (LG, of a certain model, I can't remember) had just failed, I later found out that this model of DVD-RW had a habit of failing in this fashion and nothing could be done :(

For the cost of it, you may just want to replace the drive, you can pick a new one up for between £25 and £50. Usually around the £35 mark.
Rather than spending weeks and weeks trying to get it to work.

It's an HP, in an HP machine, so it's not the LG problem. It's really strange that it can deal with DVDs, but not CDs, would be grateful for any other suggestions.

    Thanks!
