Hi,
Please can someone give me some advice on a tricky matter. I found out yesterday that me and a neighbour had been paying each others electricity bills for over a year as there was a mix up when they labelled the meters in our block of flats. I only found this out as when I got in from work yesterday I had no power and went to check on the meter and noticed my neighbour had had a pre payment meter installed which had run out of cash on it. I have spoken to my neighbour who said that they had installed it two days ago as he had had a dispute with them over the size of the bills he was receiving (which should have gone to me) so without his permission they just came to the flats and thought they had installed the pre payment meter for his flat (but they have installed it on mine incorrectly). My neighbour says that the reading on his meter (mine) was roughly double what it showed on mine (his), so will EDF now try and claim back any money that is outstanding from his account. I have been paying the bills that have been coming through the post but probably only about half of what they should have been for over a year. I need to phone EDF later to explain the situation to them but i'm scared that they will say I own thousands of pounds. What should I say to them and now that I have a pre payment meter installed for my flat by mistake is it best to tell them to leave it there or ask for it to be taken away? (Are pre payment electric meters more expensive than paying quarterly?
PLEASE HELP!

It would appear that you are in what is referred to as a 'crossed meter' situation. This is when the meters are installed and the serial number is recorded against the wrong property. I dont know if this is technically covered by the Billing Code which only allows them to back bill for a year were its their mistake. I dont know if you and your neighbour have the same supplier but you both need to phone your supplier and explain the situation. They will then need to send out an engineer (possibly 1 per supplier) to confirm whats connected to what. They can then try and work out the billing issues. Thoughout you need to make the point that the mix up is their responsibility not yours. Good luck.IT Consultant in the utilities industry specialising in the retail electricity market.

Yes, pre payment meters ARE more expensive!!Yaaay, I finally conned a man into making a honest woman of me. Even more shocking is that I can put the words "Happily" and "Married" into the same sentence and not have life insurance on my mind when I say it ;-)0

Not all are, for example Ebico charge the same whatever payment method is used.
