System32/Drivers - Big Problem Help Needed Please!

Do you visit windowsupdate at all - or was this from automatic updates?
IIRC automatica updates will not install new drivers for you....this could be from windowsupdate instead?

I refuse MS hardware updates for core modules such as disk controller, mobo etc. because they cause more problems than they solve....!

You might be able to get a "proper" XP CD and extract the ntfs.sys - or copy to a floppy and use a live linux CD to get into your disk and copy the replacement....?

Update from me - Well its working again Left it until today and tried again. It stuggled a bit but started. Backed it up to within an inch of its life and ran various checks. It kept freezing during the backing up requiring numerous switching off at mains but now seems well

Is there anything else I should check?

No I definately don't visit Windowsupdate. Only thing that happened yesterday was the downloaded Automatic Update which is now switched onto 'Notify me but don't download'. I know this is the only thing that happened because all I did that morning before was open the computer and print something before closing it and leaving for the office! (highly unusual for me as normally I am browsing over breakfast)
