PC Running Very Slow .....

My laptop is running very very slow, especially when you start it up!

When I switch on laptop MSN loads up which takes forever! I have scanned using antivirus (AVG) and there are no problems. I have defragmented the C drive. I have deleted cookies in my internet options. someone has suggested I use a Spyware programme. I thought AVG was spyware and antivirus all in one! I am not very good with computers and need some help.

I'm guessing you're using Internet Explorer? If so, click the Tools button (top right of IE) > Internet Options > under Browsing History click the Delete button > make sure all the boxes are ticked, except for Preserve Favourites website data.

I would download, install then update Malwarebytes (link), then run a Full Scan - remove anything it finds.

Then download CCleaner (link). When installing, make sure you UNTICK Add CCleaner Yahoo! Toolbar ....

Now run CCleaner, and when it loads untick anything you don't want it to delete, then click the Run Cleaner button on the bottom right. It shouldn't delete anything important, but make sure beforehand.

Once the cleaning is complete, click the Registry button on the left hand side, in between the Cleaner and Tools buttons. Click Scan for Issues - give it a minute to let it find any registry problems. Now click Fix selected issues - it will ask if you want to make a backup, so click Yes, and press Save. Now click Fix All Selected Issues and press Ok.

It might be a good idea to restart your computer, so restart it now.

More than likely it's your AV that's slowing you down.....

The reason being that AV software scans every single file that you or your PC tried to open, this takes time and can more than double the time it takes to open a file.
On startup, your PC opens thousands of files.

Specifically: by default, AVG is configured to perform a scheduled scan every single day. If you switch your PC off at night, this usually means that it starts scanning the instant you log in. In addition to this, it introduces a number of additional 'features' that are considered by some to be completely unnecessary. Fortunately, these features can be removed or disabled during (re)installation.

And if by 'MSN' you mean Windows Live Messenger you can prevent it from starting automatically quite easily, though someone else will have to tell you how; I've not used it in quite some time.

When you load up your computer, about 99% of things you have installed pre-load to save you time when you want to run the program.

If you have an oldish computer with little RAM or a slow CPU then you will find that you computer will be very slow to load up these programs.

There IS a way to turn these off, however i wouldn't really recomend it if you don't know what you are takeing off your startup list. (You might remove your antivirus by accident, causing your computer to be vulnerable to viruses etc).

I will tell you how to do it if you feel comftable you won't remove anything you shouldn't :)

This is for windows XP/98 as you didn't say which OS you are using.

Press your start button, click on run. In the box that appears type in "msconfig" without the "".
A program will open called the System Configuration Utility, press the startup tab.

There you will find a list of every program that starts up when you power on your computer. Most of them (for example Skype, jusched, nwiz, aim6) are fine to remove, and these will stop Skype, Java, some random windows program and Aim loading when you start your computer up. Saving you RAM and speeding up your computer.

please note i am not responsable if anything bad come of this :)

    William.
