Electricity payment meter mix up

Hi,
Please can someone give me some advice on a tricky matter. I found out yesterday that me and a neighbour had been paying each others electricity bills for over a year as there was a mix up when they labelled the meters in our block of flats. I only found this out as when I got in from work yesterday I had no power and went to check on the meter and noticed my neighbour had had a pre payment meter installed which had run out of cash on it. I have spoken to my neighbour who said that they had installed it two days ago as he had had a dispute with them over the size of the bills he was receiving (which should have gone to me) so without his permission they just came to the flats and thought they had installed the pre payment meter for his flat (but they have installed it on mine incorrectly). My neighbour says that the reading on his meter (mine) was roughly double what it showed on mine (his), so will EDF now try and claim back any money that is outstanding from his account. I have been paying the bills that have been coming through the post but probably only about half of what they should have been for over a year. I need to phone EDF later to explain the situation to them but i'm scared that they will say I own thousands of pounds. What should I say to them and now that I have a pre payment meter installed for my flat by mistake is it best to tell them to leave it there or ask for it to be taken away? (Are pre payment electric meters more expensive than paying quarterly?
PLEASE HELP!

Hiya
Regarding your post, I would advise you to call them URGENTLY and tell them about the mix-up regarding the electricity meters.
Is both the meters in the same cupboard? The reason why im asking is that if your neighbour refused to pay his bill, then a key meter would have been installed, please bear in mind that the meter seriel number would have come into effect with this,eg his meter seriel number on your bills and yours on his - this is why they have changed the meter - does that make sense?
If i were you, i would phone them straight away and ask to get put through to the complaints dept, tell them what has happened and demand a letter and apology in writing within 2 weeks - i would propbably ask them to get an engineer to come out and sort out the meters as soon as possible and also DEMAND compensation for your troubles.
Also in regards to prepayment meters, they are normally the 2nd cheapest option in regards to gas and elect, it really depends on who your supplier is. Normally paying quarterly is an expensive tariff, if i were you, i would either go onto a monthly direct debit (you normally get a discount going on this tariff), or go onto an online tariff (which is normally the cheapest by far) - Im on an online tariff, im saving about £300.00 per year and dont receive any paper bills (saving paper) etc.
Hope this helps.
