Don't take your pc with private files on to any pc repaierer they will snoop!
Nowadays it's not hard to fix your pc if it goes wrong and ALWAYS back up your personal files from your pc onto disc. In fact unless you use them on a regular basis (daily) then remove them from your pc in entirity as part of your back up process.

It's hard not to agree with you about the Gary Glitter and similar cases but would you be happy if repairers thought ''while i am looking at this computer I will just check this guys accounts to make sure he is paying his taxes properly''
Would you be ok if someone doing repairs in your house thought ''Oh look the family photo album, I really must make sure there is nothing dodgy in there''
My point is unless repairers find a folder called 'illegal pictures' or 'dont show the taxman' why do they have a right to snoop?

I see and agree with your point. They have no right to snoop - unless they have reason to suspect illegal activities, they then have a duty to investigate.
Try saying "I have under-a-pound in my wallet" and listen to people react!
  • As a repair tech I don't have the time to snoop as I'm paid by the hour. I also do 95% of my repair work on site and frequently ask if the client would like to watch / learn what I'm doing.
As with all trades, its a shame that a few rouge individuals spoil it for the rest of us, who are just trying to earn an honest living.

I hear you there.... Struggling to find work at the moment, mainly because people are so distrusting after the local "been to college for 3 weeks, but talk the talk" guys have buggared up their PC or laptop.

I get brought PCs by friends, friends of friends, colleagues etc..to diagnose + repair. I do NOT look at private info. When copying docs + pics from 1 PC to another I just check the folder locations and drag them across...absolutely none of my business what those folders contain, and, honestly, the quicker I can get the PC out of my house the better so I'm not gonna spend time 'snooping'.

...but I do insist that any PC I touch has firefox installed :D
