A&L Deny £10k Credit + Fine me!

Hello all -

I'm in a bit of a pickle. I had a Joint Account with A&L and was expecting a £10k credit into this account - a contribution towards a mortgage deposit. After logging in to my online account, I found the £10k sitting there and proceeded to transfer it to my Savings account for safe keeping.

Surprisingly, the £10k did not transfer into my Savings account and totally disappeared from my online system and I got a series of letters with fines for transferring funds when I have insufficient funds in my Account. However, the bank statements show that I received the £10k but is described as "ADJ MISSING CR: INCORRECT DR".

In short, i've lost £10k and had upto £100 of fines to pay on top of that. Following a series of letters to A&L they deny having credited my account with £10k (even when I show them the bank statement)!

What on earth are A&L playing at abd what do I do next? I'll have to take this to the FSA!!

Kind regards,

From where the 10K was funded from? You have to take up the complaint with them, like if it was your salary paid by your employer, complain them that you have not received it.

  • Hi there
Was this expected credit from an individual or establishment? Either way, the bank will be reluctant to offer any leeway on this.

You would need to discuss with whoever initiated the transfer in the first place, as from the sounds of it, the transfer was instigated but cancelled.

If it is a company, contact them and inform them that due to the reversed transfer your bank is enforcing charges which will be passed back to them.
If it is an individual, i'm afraid you may well be goosed....the only option to revert these charges in this case would be to contact your bank and explain the situation and hope for a customer services agent with an ounce of empathy ;)

    Hope this helps

I have no advice to offer, but the only think I will say is that A&L on-line banking is a very dangerous tool. YOu need to know extremely weel your transactions and they sti on money forever (my partner and I have just changed our rent paying arrangement because I always ended up onverdrawn like an idiot due to A&L not havinng fast payment on-line for over 250 quid- and we are both on A&L). Now i have learnt my lesson, I don't venture to transfer anything in or out that is important and bigger than say 20 pounds. I use my Natwest account for that and only pay dd's and bills with A&L.
Iwoudl say, talk to the individula/company who transferred the 10K and get the dates, transtaction details etc... as you will need this to track down where the money has gone. Also make sure they had the right account details, etc...Go in person to your branch, talk to the branch manager and escalate as quick as possible if you get not joy. And whatever you do, do not lose your temper- keep cool, calm and collected and take writen records of every conversation, promise, or rudeness you witness. It is a lot of money so it might take a while to get it back - but I am sure you will.
    Good luck!
  • A&L have given us two years of hell which we were unable to escape from as they plunged us into debt as we opened the accounts by screwing up their "easy switch" service; failing to apply some DD and paying others twice! Hard worked for Credit scores messed up irrevocably; latest is that they changed a cash payment into my partners account from £260 to £160 without any consultation, today they had failed to have a cheque cleared which they had stated would be clear by today. Now that sounds petty, but this was my only day off for months (self employed) I'd planned to recklessly go to the hairdressers, have coffee and maybe buy a new (and cheap) top. I wont have another day off for ages and they wrecked it by giving out "misinformation". Staff in only office locally are useless and only say "all we can do is apologies", well if I misinformed like this or got payments wrong I'd be fined for it! Obviously this is just a couple of memorable highlights from nearly two years of Hell!

Sick of A&L being recommended as a bank account - they couldn’t organise a moderately entertaining evening in a brewery.
They ignore letters of complaint until threatened with IFA, phone staff are aggressive and useless and I cant figure out what the in-store staff are being paid for at all. If they do deal with a complaint it takes months and when an agreement is reached they "forget" to re-pay or re-instate and then cant understand past notes! Yet again I have spent a day chasing round after them and now I need to find a bank with any kind of brains (and ethics hopefully - though that may be asking too much!)
I am so glad that others have posted their horrible experiences as they make you feel you are the only one to doubt their genius service!

Its hugely annoying when the only focus for recommending this account seems to be a £100 bonus - it cost us so much more than that in cash and lost credit rating and in the stress caused by the appalling customer services!

How many working days did you give before you tried transferring the money after you received it?

The reason I'm asking is lots of banks give two balance figures, and even then the available balance may be out of kilter with the money you have available.

If you know and can prove that the money was in your current account at least 1 week before then you should have no issue with following A&Ls formal complaints procedure which is on their website.

With any phone calls make sure you have a note pad handy and ask at the start of each call who you are talking to. Make sure you make the phone calls on a phone where you get an itemised bill and log the time of the calls.

With any letters give the letter the title "Formal Complaint" as they may not register your letters as complaint letters, enclose a copy of documentary evidence showing that the money was in the account a sufficient time before you tried to move the money and finally inform them that you will be taking legal action if the issue isn't resolve. Also make sure you get at least a proof of posting with any letters you send.

After 8 weeks of a formal complaint if it's not resolved you can take your complaint to the Financial Ombudsman Service. http://www.financial-ombudsman.org.uk/faq/complain.html

You can also contact the large newspapers i.e. Guardian, Times, Telegraph and see if their consumer champions can help you. Even if you can't your story may be used later as an illustration of what is wrong with A&L.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p
