Hi guys .....
This might be an easy one for some of you guys but i'm not sure ....

I have a folder which contains over 600files. Is there any way i can quickly get a list of all the 600+ file names into a txt document like notepad ... ? obviously i can't highlight and copy then paste because i only want the file names - not the files themselves ....

any help would be appreciated ....

thanks

    Using example directories:

Command prompt - start menu > RUN > CMD

    CD "J:\Movies"

DIR /S /B >ouputfile.txt (the /s flag tells it to list files in all subdirectories, /b tells it to list just the filenames without other data)

    copy outputfile.txt outputfile.xls

You now have two files, one is text one is an excel spread sheet. You should now be able to manipulate the data in Excel to get what your after.

wow - thanks for that, i don't wanna appear dumb here, but i assume i replace the j:\ movies with the location of what i want listed .. ? i did that but cmd doesn't like it, keeps saying incorrect ... ?

    Sorry you need

    CD /d "<directory including drive letter>"

The native CMD window will be in the "C:\Documents and Settings\username" directory.

So if I want to go into J:\Movies

    I type CD /d "J:\Movies"

The directory will now read "J:\Movies" meaning your now operating in that directory

There's a free programme called RJH extensions that will do this for you. http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/downloads/index.cfm?categoryID=1502&itemID=21460

Yeah, there are always software solutions for everything.... I used to drive the IT manager mad because I could do things in simple DOS that he'd forked out ££££££'s for in additional software.
