Hello, I'm just enquiring for a friend.
Basically, she is 17, completed her first year of college, but now does not wish to go back. Her mum has basically given her the ultimatum of get a job or go back to college. She is doing as much as she can to get a job,and absolutely does not want to go back to college. As part of the reason for wanting her to go back to college, her mum said she would lose about £500 a month if she did not go back. I think this is completely wrong and is actually only going to lose £100 roundabouts. My friend is the eldest of 2 other sisters. Her mum works a full time job, and gets child benefit (this is what she is claiming to lose £500 from)
I'd really appreciate it if anyone could give me a little insight on what actually happens to benefits if she did not go back to college.
Thanks in advance

For the eldest child, while still at college your friend's Mum will be receiving £20 a week, so £80 every 4 weeks. She may also lose some tax credits as well so might be including this in the figure.
Is she separated from your friend's Dad at all and in receipt of child support? If she is, she will also lose that once your friend leaves college.
If your friend really doesn't want to go back to college then she'll have to just keep looking for that job.

to be honest,i have no idea what those are, and bringing up the topic with her mum often leads to arguments she would rather not have. Hence asking on here

£500 just seemed alot to get in 1 month in benefit for 1 teenager.0 -
Hi Shell, no they are not seperated. If the tax credits are included to that £80 a month, what sort of figure are we talking?0

Child tax credits are benefits most parents (and some adults with no children) can receive. It depends totally on the income of the family. £500 a month does sound a lot for one child but then it depends on your friend's parent's income. All your friend can do really is keep looking for that job if she really doesn't want to go back to college.August GC 10th - 10th : £200 / £70.61

Family income would be around £22,000.
If thats all the information you can give with what i know , thanks for the help c:0 -

When my DD left school at 18 we lost £390 a month between CSA from her dad, child benefit and tax credit ( only got minimun)
I know £500 seems a lot but if the mother is a single parent and gets WTC and possible gets houseing benefit it could account for the £500. I am not saying she is right, I would not have forced my DD to stay at school if she had not wanted to and there is no way she could ever make upt he money we lost from her wages, she pays us £100 a month.TOTAL 44 weeks lose. 6st 9.5lb :T0 -
as you were psoting seen you said her parents were together lolTOTAL 44 weeks lose. 6st 9.5lb :T0
