Eon

My sister is moving to a rented house on Friday.

This will be her first time being responsible for the utilities, so she is unsure about usage etc.

As the previous tenant was with Eon, she would like to stay with that company, at least until she has found her feet.

Can new customers to Eon, pay by monthly direct debit, or do they have to pay a security deposit?
Has she left it late for a friday connection?
Can she pay more per month than she anticipates to use, so she does not fall into arrears?
I think she would like to pay £100 per month.
The house is electric only, with no mains gas, with 4 persons in a 3 bed house.

Any recommendation regarding tariff?

Regards
Munchie

    Hi

I just switched to E.On on their online tariff, SaveOnline (dual fuel) and am going to pay by monthly DD.

However, Im having second thoughts and may consider cancelling the switch before its finalized. The 'no discount on your last bill' condition is really putting me off, and so much of their price depends on this pretty huge discount, 17.5% for me. I cant remember the exact figures, but when I played around with a quote from them, their annual price (for average consumption) was around £1100 but that was with a massive ~£240 discount, otherwise their non-discount prices do now seem pretty high.

And seeing as Im also moving into rented accomodation like your sister, we may well need to leave when the contract ends, and when we do, we'll be hit by this 'penalty'.

There was a new EDF tariff that I somehow managed to overlook, cant remember the name, but it was its fifth version if that helps. And no exit fees. British Gas websaver doesnt look too bad, and if i remember correctly, their huge exit fee (£30 per fuel) only applies if you leave before 1st December. I think.

Hmm, I dunno what to do? I dont want to regret not leaving when I had the chance.

    Hiya munchings-n-crunchings :hello:

There is a couple of things for your sister to do when she moves in on Friday.

Take the readings from the meter.
Then ring E.ON advise the property she has moved in to, the date she took responsibility, the meter readings.
She will be able to pay by monthly Direct Debit, that will be no problem at all.
Ask the advisor about the tariffs and what would be best.

When she has more time, she can then look on the website and comparison sites to check out the tariffs for herself.

qxt123 is correct, we don't give the discount on final bills.

    Helena :)

  • But why don't the switching sites make mention of this very important T&C?

    Hi carmine,

Switching sites is not an area I deal with personally, I would need to speak to someone that does.

I will see what I can find out for you and let you know.

If you want to pay £100 a month - quite reasonable for electric only with careful use - reckon on using about 12000kwh a year (I think I've done the maths correctly) so you could use that on a switching site as annual use. Once you know the unit rate, discounts available etc. you can work out more accurately how many kwh you get for your £1200 a year.

If it's storage heating,it's a bit more complicated because you're probably better off on Economy 7 where you use cheap rate electricity overnight to charge the heaters up. You pay more for daytime electricity (usually) so it's only suitable for storage heaters for most people.

To avoid arrears, you need to use your meters regularly. By the end of September, you should be able to say how many kwh are used in a typical summer month by working out a daily average (total kwh divided by number of days) and multiplying by 31. Depending on how much heating is used and for how many months, that might be typical use for about eight months.

It is the remaining winter months that catch people out. If you have a well insulated, south facing property; don't feel the cold much, and we have a mild winter, you may get away with using the heating rarely between March and November. Once the heating goes on, meter reading needs to increase and use needs to be moderated to keep to 12000kwh (or whatever you get for your £1200 a year) over the year unless you're prepared to pay more.
  • Thanks for the advice.

I had forgotten that there is oil fired heating at the property.
So the electricity primarily will be for cooking, lighting and powering a teenagers bedroom.
There is an open fire as well, which will help reduce the consumption of more expensive commodities.

I will update my sister, on what she needs to do on moving in,

    Hi carmine,

I have been able to find out that the info about no discount on final bills is on at least 3 of the switching sites, one of these is shown on the first page when you click on the tariff.

The other 2 offer the T&Cs to click on, this is just under the tariff info.

I have found that 2 of the sites don't seem to mention anything, this, I am still looking in to and will get back to you.
