my poor computer

can anyone help my poor computer. It is running really slow it is not just the internet it is everything about it for example it took me 10 mins just to open up word today. I have AVG and superanti spyware on the computer already and have been scanning regularly this has made no difference to the computer at all. the computer is quite old about 5-6 years old top of the range when bought is there anything I can do to remedy this or do I have to buy another computer please help no real techie language though as complete novice if you recommend buying what is a good deal at the moment?

Press the windows key + break/pause and tell us what processor and memory you have.

reading off the front of the tower it is a tiny amd athlon 64 windows xp that's all I know sorry

I imagine there are a lot of junk files lying around and the hard disc has never been defragmented.

just been defraged and also use cc cleaner amd athlon 64 processor 3800+ 2.4ghz 1gb of ram
