What can we do around Basingstoke?

Options
Grandparents are having the kids for 2 nights and we're staying nearby.

Have had nice days in Winchester and nice days in Portsmouth, but fancy something different that's kid free and fun.

Anyone suggest anything? Happy to drive up to an hour from basingstoke. OH not a fan of cities, so please don't suggest london, as I'll be going alone!

Thanks.

Is Salisbury too far? About 40 miles from B'stoke..
    Maybe via Stonehenge.

  • I live in Basingstoke.

Depends what you're looking for really. It's no where near as nice to wander round here as it is in Winchester and Portsmouth and I would've recommended those places really!!

Basingstoke is essentially a large shopping centre full of generic shops that are in every other town, a leisure park containing a bowl plex, ice rink, swimming pool, cinema, gala bingo. Generic restaurants and pubs too.

What type of things do you enjoy doing on days out?

Hmm, I live near Basingstoke and have struggled to come up with anything!! I could recommend plenty of days out that kids would love but not ones just for adults - you can tell I always have three little ones in tow can't you!!

There's the Vyne (National Trust 16th century house and estate) that you could wander around, Wellington and Beale park if you fancy a picnic and a wander around a nice park. There's Milestone Museum in Basingstoke if you like History! There's Highclere castle in Newbury - there's an Egyptian exhibition there till the 3rd September. You can wander around the castle and grounds too. If you want to do some shopping I personally prefer Reading to Basingstoke - the Oracle is quite nice and there's a lot of places to eat along the river. You can do a 40 min river cruise throughout the summer from the Oracle and there's a 'beach' there at the moment with deck chairs and scatter cushions IF there's any sun - quite sweet watching the children play. There's also a Macarthur Glen Designer outlet in Swindon (about 1 hr drive I think) that has a good selection of shops.

There must be more - if I think of any, I'll let you know!

    HTH anyway x

Not usre how old your children are, but if they aren't teenagers then you may like to go to Paulton's Park http://www.paultonspark.co.uk/

We went there for our youngest daughter's third birthday a couple of months ago & we all though it was fab, not cheap, but great!
