British Gas HomeCare - A Lesson !
I have owned my own homes (or part owned with the bank) for 20 years now and have always paid for BG Homecare for the central heating.
Following several repairs to an old but generally good Vaillant boiler this spring BG wrote to to say they could no longer ssupport the boiler due to problems with obtaining spares. The boiler was working at this point but I thought with summer on the way I would wait until the next breakdown and put in a new one.
Letters subsequently arrived from BG inviting me to 'renew' my cover which I ignored assuming there was no point as they could no longer support my boiler.
Time passed and had communication regarding the annual service which I again ignored. BIG MISTAKE. Checking bank statements revealed BG had continued to take £17.79 by DD each month and only when challenged by email did they issue a cancelation letter.
A phone conversation with BG quickly ensued during which I was informed that it was my reponsibility to cancel the agreement, that it stayed in place because it covered all my central heating and that the renewal invitation was sent as a legal requirement but I did not need to 'accept' as renewal was automatic. Basically I have to tell them I don't want the service but don't have to tell them I do.
I have requested copies of all relevant correspondance from them as I intend to chesk out all their claims carefully but don't expect to get anywhere. If nothing else comes of this everyone in my position should take heed and not assume the likes of BG will do the right thing !!
