VW paint peeling, what can I do?
I bought a used vw golf from a land rover dealer about 6 months ago. The car itself is less than 3 years old and is still in warranty. Lately I have noticed on the rear bumper panel the laquer (I think this is it anyway - it's the clear cling film looking thing on top of the paint) is starting to peel away in two different corners around the same light.
I took into my local VW dealer to have a look at it and I was advised this would be covered by warranty by a friend. The first bodyshop man looked at it (and after a lot of rubbing it with his dirty hand ) he advised this would not be covered under warranty as it looks like it has been resprayed. I then had a conversation asking why he thought this, his main point was that VW would never allow the car out the factory if it had a paint defect, but the defect has only started now.
He then said he would get his manager to get a paint depth machine to check to see if it had been repainted. The manager then came out and had a look, when I asked about the paint depth he said this would not work as it only works on aluminium and metal, and said this panel is plastic? All the paint work looks the same on the golf?
After a bit they both said they would not do anything as it's not covered under warranty. Is there anything I can do? Should this be covered under warranty?

Take it the Land Rover dealer that sold it to you, see what they have to say.
They probably had the bumper resprayed prior to selling it to you.0 -

The problem is I don't want them to do it only for it to happen again or them to use rubbishy products.

No, you purchased a used car, so VW is not responsible for any work carried out by a third party, that is assuming the the dealer that you purchased from carried out the poor workmanship.0 -

The problem is, its impossible to prove its a factory defect,
it does need to go back to where you bought it, if they wont do the work then you have nothing im afraid. If your warranty with land rover says engine and gearbox like most used dealers warranties do, then unlucky0 -
But we don't know if any work has had happened on the car, that's what the problem is. This could be the original paintwork that is peeling.
Peeling lacquer is usually the sign of poorly prepared repair work, it is highly unlikely to be a factory problem.
However, it is just possible that the work may well have been carried out by VW, tho' unlikely.
Difficult to prove, I still think the OP should seek redress from the seller.0 -
VW Won't do a thing unless it's for money! I found that out when my car went in for it's first service last week. To balance the 2 front wheels it would of been £161!!!!
They are a total rip off

Thanks for the advice, I still don't get why the bodyshop guy at VW need to peel more of the laquer off with his thumb while talking to me0
