i very much doubt it, with vista nowadays, the key is registerd to your GUID which wil;l change if you change your OS. Plus the keys are generated for each different version, if what you say is right, that means it would also work for the ultimate, premuim, and business. Its not that unsecure, theyve developed some lovely ways to keep people out

doubt it as much as you like, but my vista keys work for both x32 and x64, though it may be different with OEM keys (though 2 minutes research suggests it isn't) :D

This guy is talking rubbish, your license key will be good for the 64-bit version of whatever vista type he had originally (ultimate, home etc).

You'll need to borrow an OEM edition install CD/DVD from somewhere tho

-Shouldn't matter which type (ie ultimate/home etc) the DVD is branded as *I believe* any edition can be installed from the one disk -MUST be an OEM disc not RETAIL disc tho...

It's all about specification on paper and the sales guys in the shop are generally trusted to know everything.

as far as i know any vista/server 2008 cd (oem or retail) can be used with any vista/server 08 key (ie you use a retail ultimate key on a oem disk it should still work)

If it's not fit for purpose because 6GB cannot be used, then surely every new car sold in the UK is also not fit for purpose, as the advertised top speed is more than 70mph, yet they can't be legally driven over that speed?

No. Not legally anyway! The 64 bit version isn't available for download off the Microsoft website, unlike Vista. I'm not sure what would happen though if you got it off a torrent site though. Apart from the risk of a virus, I don't know if the key would work.

It should for Vista, otherwise why would Microsoft allow you to download the 64 bit version for this purpose?!

Nope. Technically, Windows XP Professional x64 Edition has more in common with Windows Server 2003 than any of its predecessors. You'd need to buy a brand-new license.
  • Where abouts can you download Vista x64 on Microsoft.com?
