Super Casinos - will they boost local economies?

This article claims that the new casinos can only be good news for the local economies. I'm buying a house in an area that has applied for a large casino on the seafront. It sounds like a horrible thing to me... Morally, aesthetically and in terms of the types of people and problems it would attract - but am I just being snobbish - could it really be a much needed boost to the local economy?

Croupiers are on pretty good hourly rates I believe?
I think it can go one of two ways, Santo Domingo in Dominican Republic has a huge gambling quarter, and alongside it a pretty marina, & lots of nice resturaunt ,bars etc Very monaco style really, one of the "nicer" bits of SD, where otherwise the place is almost completley economically depressed.
Or it could go the Blackpool way with the "skint" businesses your crazy georges, pound shops, pawn shops brothels and so forth. Lets be honest, if youve been to blackpool the main reason it remains budget is partly to do with the seasonal economy. Mother said Las Vegas is quite like that - but of course, one super-casino does not make a whole community disappear into deparavity & debt.
Where is it, the house I mean? Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast :beer:0 -
How can it? No one is going to have any money when they come out of the casino.0

Depends though if the gamblers are tourists or residents, in SD they are predominantly tourists. Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.

Those are my principles. If you don't like them, I have others.
I have writer's block - I can't begin to tell you about it.
You told me again you preferred handsome men but for me you would make an exception.

I'm sure the chavs and the teenage Mums will love it! Personally i cant see people travelling to Folkestone to gamble. Well not without major development.A bargain is only a bargain if you would have brought it anyway!0 -
I didn't realise chavs originated in folkestone,,, nor teenage mums!!! We were quite impressed with some of folkestone when we made a rare visit recently, not sure it deserves the rep it has got.
Theres a casino, fairly large, in Margate, I dont think it really has that much impact, tbh.0 -
Southend-on-Sea is one of the places which is trying to get one of these super-casinos.
Most local opinion is: no, it won't do a darned thing for the local economy. In addition there are going to be a lot of traffic problems on already-jammed roads, parking problems, you name it.
The people who come from a distance to 'play' in a super-casino are not going to spend their money in local businesses, restaurants, shops etc. They're going to spend it completely within the casino building itself.
