New Boiler

Hi,

I hope you can advise....

I am going to get quotes to replace my 17 year old boiler (Glow-worm Hideaway) since it has a low boiler efficiency.
It is located on the floor of an airing cupboard in the bedroom.

I have been in my house for 5 years but it has been extended before I moved in (from 7 to 11 radiators).

We currently have a Traditional Open Vented System (two tanks in the loft) and because we have two power showers, I assume I need to stay with this system type. Correct me if I'm wrong.

There are 2 adults and two young kids in our home.

Can you please suggest what sort of questions I should be asking the engineer(s) who visit, so that I have all the info I need to make a correct boiler & system choice.

Thanks in advance.

You could move to an unvented or heat store if you are prepared to replace the showers and want to lose the cold water tank, or to a sealed heating system if you want to lose the F&E tank.

    Both add complexity.

Since this is moneysaving, you might want to look into the payback period for the proposed boiler - you have to spend a lot on gas to make the efficiency gains worthwhile.

Good afternoon: You don't necessarily have to stick with your current setup: any changes would be contingent on the incoming mains supply eg. combi , unvented cylinder.

This guide from the Energy Saving Trust as well the Heating and Hot Water Industry Council website are both excellent resourcesand should answer many of your questions.

A RGI, after conducting a site survey (which should include tresting your mains pressure and flow rates) and discussing your heating and hot water requirements/options would be best placed to advise. Try to find RGIs via personal recommendation from a source you trust and always check his/her registration with Gas Safe Register. Compare each quote 'like for like' as you will discover not all quotes are quotes for the same specification.

Cost will be dependent on your location in the UK (Hampshire will be pricier), the standard of the specification and adherence to ' Best Practice'/manufacturer's specifications.
