HD TV = HD Channels???

I am sooo clueless with stuff like this its not funny.

So got a HD tv yesterday for the bedroom (free i might add, didn't go out on a spending spree) and its connected to a normal virgin media box. In order to get HD channels does that mean i need a virgin media HD box or can i go out and get a HD freeview box?

The TV has freeview built in, so i suggested to my OH to get rid of this virgin media box, but he said freeview wouldn't work (i am assuming because in the bedroom is no aerial point).

I am guessing we'll get HD in the living room as getting a HD tv today for the lounge and already have a V+ HD box.

Looked on ebay for V+ HD boxes, if i bought one off ebay and just swapped it over with my normal virgin media box, would it still work?

Thanks if anyone can make any sense out what i have just asked...

Dont know about Virgin but you cant get freeview HD as yet and when you do it will involve a new box which no one makes as yet. Freeview requires a aerial and is very dependant on where you are as to what the reception is like

You can get freesat HD (Not sky) but it needs a dish costs is around £100-£120 roughly plus dish/cable if you dont have it

Thanks, i read that. They have an offer on at the moment for V+ HD box for £49.

But when you read the fine print existing customers can take up the offer, but only if they don't already have a box, we do, in the lounge.

So getting another V+ HD box would set us back £150

We were very lucky and paid £0 three years ago when we moved house, they re connected everything for us for £0 and we paid £0 for the V+ box as well. How things change.....

Virgin is competing hard against Sky to get new customers and retain existing customers so you can phone up and say you are thinking of switching and negotiate a better deal.

I do this every year and last week as well as getting a better broadband deal I got a free HD box with no installation fee from Virgin.

There is a thread in Money-Saving Expert specifically for re-negotiating your Virgin contract which gives useful tips and hints for the bargaining process.

Best of all the phone call to Virgin is free when you use their 150 number !!
  • I get a pretty good deal from them at the moment:

    V+ box
    Additional standard box
    Broadband - L
    TV - XL
    Phone - M

    for £44

I just rang them about the V+ HD box and got a right snotty women on the phone, saying 'no' its £150 for a second HD box when i said i already have a standard box so no install required, she said 'no' its £150 can't do anything about it.

Very sorry to hear that you had no luck.

Maybe it only works on an annual basis when you phone them up just before the annual contract is due to reach its anniversary and they know you can cancel without penalty.

This tactic is worked for me for the last 2 years when i was able to improve my package so maybe worth trying again just before the anniversary of your contract.

Worth a try as 150 phone call is free and it only costs a little time.
  • I've been with VM for 5 years now, was with them when it was NTL, so im always ringing up to negoiate a price with the stuff i want.

Thats how i got all 3 services for £44.
