I've got an LED Lenser P7, they use CREE (LED) chips.

I've had an electrician visit today (on another matter) and thought I'd pick his brains about LEDs. He said that since the 50W halogens are on a 12V transformer then they don't really use 50W, more like about 8w. I've not heard this theory before and thought that the current was increased to make up for the drop in voltage - and that 50W is 50W whether it's on 240V or 12V. Was I being fobbed off? He said to just use the 50W and not worry about it.

I'm thought that using this - http://www.all-lighting.co.uk/p5975/aurora-led-1-9w-constant-current-indoor-controller.htm - would sort it out.

Sounds like an electrician. You're right.

I'm not confident in your choice of controller, 9W sounds too low for any serious amount of lighting.

    and that 50W is 50W whether it's on 240V or 12V.

Didn't the electrician know that we're on 230 volts in this country?

AdrianW2 do you by any chance have experience of the led's mentioned in your link. They sound promising. I would be interested in trying one.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.
