Removal of coal fired back boiler

Options
Is it easy to remove a coal fired back boiler?

I am having a new gas fired CH system put in and we need to get the old back boiler out as we are reusing some of the pipework. The pump has been disconnnected already but if anyone could advise on how you'd go about removing the actual back boiler bit I'd appreciate it.

Good evening: removal of the BBU/flue is a standard part of my OH's quotes when he installs a new gas central heating system...ask your RGI to give a price for this work....can be a filthy job:eek:

Thanks. I've done a bit of Googling and seen that there's a lot of mess involved but luckily we are having the messy stuff done all at the same time and before we start decorating. Phew!

Unfortunately, the RGI's that I have contacted for a quote (3 of them) have all come back and said that they've never removed one before so don't know what's involved or how much to charge! The only place that said they'd remove it as part of the work was British Gas and they came in at nearly £3K more than the next nearest quote!!! Eeek!

So I suppose that my next question is - is it okay to leave it in place for the time being and just remove the fire? I have read that if you plan to use the fireplace for an open fire or even a gas fire in the future you run the risk of explosions if you leave the boiler in place. Is that correct? Sounds a bit scary to me, especially as I was planning on having an open fire in there!

Gosh, and there was me thinking it would be really easy to do! Looks like I either leave it in for now and scrap the plans for an open fire or start the quoting process again. Or get an electric fire instead.

Thanks for the info. I am on it!
