Cash Converters & Guitar

I bought a guitar last week from Cash Converters for £99, its an Epiphone G-310 SG, and took it away. As there was no way of tuning it in the shop, I asked what my options were, and they said if there was any problem, I could return it to the shop. As it happened, there is, there is awful fret buzz if you take the action down towards anywhere near playable, its 2mm at the head, and 7mm at the bridge. Its almost impossible to tune, it keeps going out, and the humbuckers are awful. They said they took it to a shop "up the road", and they said it was ok, but I think not.
I also have a Fender Stratocaster, and this is not even a similair musical instrument! I paid by Visa Debit, the guitar is still with them (got back from work too late to deal with it). What are my rights? I still have the reciept, BTW. Thank you in advance.

  • if you arnt prepared to play with it (ie put new strings on, sort the truss rod out, fix the action) get a refund, you could always take it to a tech to get them to set it up, but that wont be free.

bit harsh comparing an epiphone to a fender strat as they are different qualitys, epiphones are generally cheaper and comparable to squiers.

I did put new strings on, a set of Ernie Ball Super Slinkys. Brand spanking. The truss rod on an Epiphone is not quite up to head to stock warpage, it wont straighten that out. And as Epiphone is Gibson, but made in the Far East, I expected a bit more from them, I suppose, not quite Strat or Gibson level, but a warped neck and buzzing electrics?
And, TBH, I was asking what rights I had to return it, or get it set up properly. Its a guitar, it has to play to a certain standard, ie if the neck is so far out you get fret buzz when the action is set right at fret 12, then it isn't acceptable as a guitar, is it? Its like a tv without any sound.
  • if the neck is warped then its not gonna be possible to set the action up properly, send it back.

best way to check the neck is to put a straightedge on it (a 2foot steel ruler does the job), then adjust the truss rod.

cash converters should really have somone doing this (at least checking them) in the shop as its not that complicated and they can find out most of the info online, they do seem to sell a lot of guitars after all (my local one has loads).

My lad has both an Epiphone SG and a Fender Strat and agrees there is no comparison in the two, that said, its a decent guitar in its own right and should have a reasonable sound.

    Good luck!

...so technically you have the right to return it. However, proving it could be a challenge. I would just turn up with the guitar, find the person who said that to you, and say I was returning it as per their promise.
