Cast iron fireplace - stain on top - don't think it's painted so what is it?

I'm a bit waffley about this. We've a Victorian cast iron fireplace which has got a round stain on the mantel where a heavy ornament was sat. It's not really a stain as in colour or paint, more an indentation ( but surely you can't indent on cast iron? ). But you can clearly see the shape of the ornament.
My O/H said 'paint it'. But the fireplace isn't painted, at least I don't think it is. It is black but a sort of metally black.
Anyone got any idea how I can get rid of this mark ?

I can't see how you could have a dent if it was cast iron. Can you post a picture?0
