Free or low cost payroll software

Options
Hi Does anyone have any experience of any of the free or low cost payroll software that is around? We only have 3 employees so we only need something very basic.
Thanks

I think sage is quiet cheap, but i dont know if you would need any additional training on it.

HMRC create an Employer CD ROM each year that can do the PAYE calcs, P11d calcs, etc for you.

I think it's free and will probably be able to do all you need it to. Contact them to find out if you qualify for one.

  • I use Calcpay -

It's a yearly licence, this year £50 + VAT for 2-company licence, everyone I know who uses it and Sage find it more straightforward. It comes as a free trial package, so you can use it for 3 "pay periods" before you commit to buy. The tech support is very good as well, the accountant who originally had it written for his clients is on the end of the phone!

I'm pretty sure everyone gets sent one, so if you haven't had yet had yours do ask.

Certainly for 3 people, it would do the business. I'm not sure if it prints payslips, but for 3 staff it's not a huge job to do them manually, either by hand or on Excel. I used to use it to do weekly calculations for up to 10 staff, and as long as I wasn't interrupted it didn't take that long.

fengirl has a payslips template if you ask her nicely. ;)

Thank you all. I have got the HMRC cd but it doesn't do the actual payslip or give the net pay. I know it is not a huge job to transcribe the data to excel - but I always get interrupted (the penalty from working at home with 4 children !). I also like the idea of just having all the info on 1 system. I've just downloaded calcpay so will have a play with that.

I expect fengirl's payslip takes the gross and subtracts the deductions to give you the net pay, ready to write the cheque / do the bank transfer.

This looks perfect for the OP as it is free, although I can't use it as I have more than 3 companies.

I have used http://www.12pay.co.uk/ for about 18 months now. You can us it for the first 3 months were free then its about £50 for the year. I have found it very easy to use, it can calculate holiday pay, ssp etc. You can print the pay slips onto plain paper and print weekly, monthly reports etc.
