If it were me and I had that cheque for £1500 right now I wouldn't spend the full £1500 on a laptop that's for sure. I'm a real gagdet freak and have been spending far too much recently (digital slr, laptop, flatscreen tv) but I still know that when I'm shopping for something it has to be a bargain. That's why I love this site. It gives you ideas as well as specific items that are currently cheap.
I got my laptop from the Dell Outlet wesite as I've already mentioned. Given the money again I'd probably buy a Inspiron 6000/6400 or a 9300/9400 from the outlet website and spend the rest on something else. What you're looking for is a top graphics card really though. That's the only worry I have. My 64mb X300 Radeon is the lowest spec Radeon graphics card.
You still haven't said what screen size you want. That's really important when making your decision here.
The key to getting a bargain on the website is about timing. There are people who make a living from the outlet website by selling the pcs on ebay afterwards. Only 1 out of 30 might be a real bargain everyday so you need to be quick and you need good timing. As I said, on the hour and half hour after 5am and before 12pm everyday.
If that doesn't suit you then I would go for the £929 9400 on the main site. It will do everything you need and has a very good graphics card to. Thta only gets you one year collect and return warranty though. But you could upgrade that.
Just something else that may be very important for hooking the laptop to the tv. Many reviewers and forum members are adament that the ATI Radeon graphics cards are the best for playing stuff through your flatscreen. The top line XPS laptop comes with an Nvidia Geforce card. See here for help.
