Is there anyhting like mint.com for the UK?

Sorry if this has been posted before - I did a search for mint.com but nothing came up.

I've heard about an online finance aggregator called Mint.com and it looks really, really good! check it out: mint.com/product/videos/mint-demo/

Problem is, it's US only at the moment, but I think it'd be really handy if I could link all my stuff together to help manage my accounts etc.

Does anyone here know of a similar UK based service?

Cheers

Basil

  • I'm sure I signed up for Mint or a similar site, and it even downloaded transactions from my bank automatically. I didn't rate it.

I use MS Money which (for now) reconciles itself automatically with my bank so I can easily check my finances day to day. Microsoft have discontinued Money in the US, and although they haven't released it in the UK for years, but you can still find copies for sale.

Gnucash is a free program but I couldn't get on with it - it wasn't as intuitive as MS Money.

Using software on your pc you also don't have to worry as much about security (as long as you are sensible and don't click dodgy links/run anti-virus).
  • Yodlee Moneycenter is exactly like Mint.com, and works with UK accounts. Free, too.

    Very good.

Try First Direct internet banking Plus.

Free to use and you don't need to have a First Direct account.

    Hi,

I came across a new start-up called Money Dashboard. They are launching into the UK market shortly and potentially look to be very similar to Mint.com
I have signed up for the Beta at Moneydashboard.com and am keeping my fingers crossed!

You just happened to "come across" this new site? And "they" are launching into the UK market? And you've signed up for the beta?

All seems very odd, given that a couple of months ago you were touting it as "our new site" and "we're looking for alpha-testers".

Did you just forget that this service that you just "came across" and "signed up for" was actually your own site?

I definitely won't be signing up for any financial services website which is run by someone who feels it necessary to promote itself through spam and lies.
  • Ooof, harsh. Very cynical posting indeed from TMBGfan, but saying his post is spam and lies might be stretching it a little. :)

I did have a quick look at Money Dashboard and it looks pretty good. It's the most similar thing I could find to Mint. I haven't signed up, though... I'd like to see some video links on their site to show how it works properly first before adding my details in there. I think that's kind-of a must for sites like this, users need to be absolutely 100% confident that if they're linking up sensitive bank details, they're going to need to know exactly what they're signing up for first.

Thanks to everyone for the links, but it seems like there's really nothing of the same polish and quality of Mint.com out there for the UK at the moment. :(
  • Sorry but you've got to be utterly crazy to be giving your financial details over to one place.
I mean, all of your details? Every bank account, credit card, billed service all in one place?

And if they get hacked will you be complaining that they didn't keep your data secure?

For services like Egg Money/First Direct Plus/Account Unity, you don't hand over your financial details. They never pass through the service's computers - they are stored in an encrypted file on your own computer. That file can only be accessed using information hosted on the remote server, but your computer communicates your log-in information directly to your on-line banking, just as it does when you do it yourself. For someone to access your accounts, they'd need to get into your computer *and* the remote server, *and* your username and password for the service.

That said, I wouldn't hand over *any* details to a company I didn't trust, and that includes any company run by someone who promotes itself on forums which don't allow advertising and/or touts for business by pretending to be its own satisfied customer. (I'd call the former spamming and the latter lying, but apparently that's "harsh" ;-) )
  • So it's the worst of two ideas then?

Either it needs to have the data stored locally and used locally which is more secure, or store and use it remotely.

Having the webpages hosted remotely but using locally stored data (it's got to read the data from the local storage into the webpages and display it somehow!!!) isn't efficient.

If your internet is down or their site then you get no access and you cannot use it from any PC only your home one.

It's a bit like BT Vision. Everything is hosted remotely. If the web connection dies you cannot watch your recorded TV and get no program guide.
Cloud computing is not a good idea you know.
  • Hi,

I just signed up for moneystrands.com, which recognises my UK Halifax bank accounts and looks very similar to mint.com.

It has the Verisign, McAfee Secure and TRUSTe logos on it's site which made me think it must be secure, and won an award, and also an iPhone app which I think is great.

However, the app is in $ (apart from my bank account info, which is in £) and although I can change the settings for the app to £ on the website, the website is currently down and keeps saying "Oops, looks like something went wrong. Thanks for trying out moneyStrands and please excuse any inconvenience. We are working to improve our service." I have no idea whether this will be fixed in a couple of hours or a couple of months!

Hopefully the website issue is a temporary thing and I'll be able to find out if it's any good. This post probably isn't overly helpful at the moment but I do think this site is worth keeping an eye on!
