Options
Everytime i went to the update website, and installed the updates, restarted, my comp would crash. I had to reinstall XP Pro. It happened on my laptop aswell.

Can anybody advise me on this?

Thanks

Very strange - I stay up to date with updates via the automatic updates and have not had a problem.

You could try narrowing the problem down by only installing one or two updates at a time. You should be able to uninstall them - they store undo files in the Windows directory which you should be able to see given the appropriate explorer options.

    Just a thought

thanks MisterT2, but thats the problem. Once there installed, you have to reboot. On the reboot, it crashes, before it gets to the XP sign ???

All updates except one have been fine with my PC. Safety Pack 1 crashed my system three times, so I have not installed it. It just sits there looking at me guiltily in Microsoft Updates, daring me to try again.
    No way!

Ditto Libra, SP1 totally screwed up my comp also, needed a complete reinstall. However the daily updates do not cause a problem. Unfortunately I can't shed any light on Mclarens problem except to suggest that a reinstall may be necessary.

The problem is during the install and not the download??

I used to have problems downloading on 56k connecting causing my computer to crash.. but on broad band I'm fine..

I had the same problem. The pc would keep restarting itself (4 or 5 times per day) and I had to reinstall XP twice. OE wouldn't recognise my password either. I went to the control panel and uninstalled SP1 and all other updates about 2 months ago and haven't had a problem since ;D

I must admit that I have had no problems with any of the Windows updates for either my machine at home or in work.

If everyone is having problems with SP1 and the like imagine the problems that we are all going to face with SP2 when it is released sometime this year ;D ;D

    cheers

I must admit that I had a bunch of problems with SP1 too. In the end I renamed files and copied them all over the place to get them to install correctly. I thought that later versions had been fixed.

You should be able to get into safemode .... anyway ....

If you have the time to play at some point, its probably worth installing the patch and then looking to see whats been put in the "Run Once" registry key. This will list any programs that have to be run once (as opposed to every time) on reboot.

You can always delete the key to prevent any problems, but this would allow you to investigate further.

If you are not happy using the registry then there is a really nice (free) utility from http://www.sysinternals.com called Autoruns v4.32. This shows you exactly whats happening when you reboot your PC. Remember to backup/save point before you make any changes to the registry.....sorry if you knew all this.

    okay - no problem.

I personally use backups when installing any software. You should have a look at backup software - there are a lot of choices about. It takes me less than 20 mins to restore my PC back to a known state. Much quicker than spending a day reinstalling apps and setting preferences.
